Hook skins - a question?

Hiya all, just wondered is anyone else using hook skins in clear water conditions and are you having a notable success with them? Or are we crediting barbel with more intelligence than they deserve? Looking forward to your replies - all the best Michael....

I dont think they will make any difference...i always use braid hooklengths and whip most the hook in braid...that said i would never use shiney hooks in clear water..;)

I have taken barbel, trotting, on just a shiny hook with no bait on it while testing my float shotting. Infact, only last year i took my kids out with a friend of theirs for a days stick float fishing and did just that-first cast unbaited shiny hook, a few minutes later first barbel. Must make a difference when its moving through the swim. He saw a glimmer and thought i must ave that. I was a hero the rest of the day.

I use them in low & clear water and I think they give me an edge, but come this time of year, I dispense with them for less complex rigs. One of the things I do like is the hooking angle you can achieve with them, its very aggresive

Numpty question here , but what is a hook skin ? I am presuming it is some sort of tubing / sleeve to stop shiny hooks glinting and spooking fish ?

Thanks for that insight Simon . Why not just use hooks that aren't shiny or is that way too obvious ? Realtree camo hooks ? I bet they exist :)

hook skins - a question

Good point Mike, the hooks I use are not too shiny, but after inadvertently dropping my rig in the river a couple of weeks ago I was stunned. At 12 feet and in two foot of water, I could see the braid, the lead and the hook stood out like a sore thumb - it was very sunny but it made me think? But if they are hungry and you are feeding sensibly me thinks they will not worry about a shiny hook? Cheers Michael ;-)

try the "dull looking" hooks by ESP Raptor
