hook pulls

over the last 2 sessions i,ve managed to pull out of 2 barbel due to the hook pulling free, i,m using a nice simple running ledger with a 12 inch braid hooklink/hair rig using a boilie as bait, both have been text book bites and new hooks and i was just wondering what could have caused this not expeiriencing this before

Jerry, I would not look into it to deeply if I were you!
You are a proven good angler who knows the score, **** appens!!!!!!
 
As Keith says, **** happens and hook pulls are inevitable but what hooks are you using? I've had only 1 hook pull in recent memory when using a straight pointed hook (drennan SSs), whereas I've yet to bump one off using hooks with an inturned point - Korum S3s and Talon Tips.

It's probably just one of those things, although Barbel do seem to be less prone to hook pulls than other fish so maybe it's worth looking at!
 
i use the drennan super specialist barbel, never had a problem before maybe as said its just one of those things, i just found it mighty strange how its happenened in consecutive sessions

I had a similair thing earlier on in the season, having never had a hook pull from a barbel before[ not counting weeded fish] i had two consecutive hook pulss one with a drennan super specialist and the other with a raptor! I was very puzzled and could only summise that the fish were either hooked just outside the mouth or very lightly hooked because once a hook is in those rubbery lips it normally doesnt come out!
 
Sorry to hijack Jerry, but you've got me thinking now. I've had an unusual couple of hook pulls in last three weeks & I put it down to using very small size 14 hooks (Drennan Super Specialised, very short hair with single small pellet).. I even went onto catch a barbel at the end of the session that had a hook wound well inside the mouth that I'm sure looked fresh enough to be my lost earlier fish ?

I've only just started using such small hooks....Just a brand coincidence I'm sure...

I use a hooklink of braid between 12 and 18inches to a size 10 drennan barbel hook, baitwise I was using a 15mm boilie on a short hair, by short I have it litterally sat about a cm away if that

I also suffered two hook pulls in August, one a big fish almost ready for netting (i.e. after about 5 mins) using a size 6 conti with a hair rigged boilie about 5mm from hook. Very unusual: the other, on hair rigged casters to a size 12 animal, the very next day
