Hook Pattern

Hi Guys, i`ve been using Kamasan specimen and Animal hooks in size 16 for my Barbel and Chub fishing when using maggots or casters as hook bait.

The problem i`m having is the hooks tend to open up and i`m dropping good fish.

Can anyone recommend a good eyed hook pattern in size 16.

Legering - Drennan Carbon Feeder.
Float fishing - Drennan Super Spades.

Or if eyed hooks are prefered - Drennan Carbon Specialist.

And if they don't look strong enough (obviously your line bs has a bearing) but try Kamasan B982 X-strong hooks.

Mustad long point specimen or carp, very sharp, strong and cheap at 99p a packet.

I tried the super specialists in a size 14 last summer trotting for barbel on the Trent, i bent a couple, the hook point didnt last and it kept bursting my maggots as i hooked them on. Mustad long point specialist for me.

Nothing wrong with Animal Hooks in that size range imho young Kev. I've caught plenty of barbel and chub on them without problems. Try playing the fish a bit more sympathetically maybe? ;)

A line-aligner (or mag-aligner) might help with a better hook-hold.

Simon the swim i`ve been fishing is close to a snag, i`m using an 8lb hook length, 10lb main and a fairly soft actioned rod.
Once hooked i have to exert a certain amount of pressure, almost hit and hold, no problem with the smaller Barbel but fish nearing the double figure stamp just seem to open the hook and are lost. ( I`d rather that than leaving them with a hook and length of line ) even Chub of about 5lb are doing the same.
I`m just looking for a stronger hook that might be up to the job.

Pallatrax hooks are your friends in the small sizes. Far stronger than Drennan Super Specialists.

Drennan Specimen- recomended to me by a very good float angler who lands some very big barbel on relatively light gear.

i've not had any problems with animal hooks either. size 16 with 8lb hook link seems a bit unbalanced to me ?
