Hi All

Garry Mortimer

Senior Member
Iam Garry, new to the forum. 57 years old and all round angler living in Scotland. Fish regularly for cats, carp an roach in Spain and pike in Scotland. Only got into barbel couple seasons ago, but was fortunate to get help and friendship off a top barbel angler. Had some good results but realistically can only get to Trent about 4 times a year for 3-4 day sessions. Have also targeted comizo in Spain, but no big girls yet, had em up to 7lb.

Other interests include birds, bats and real beer:)

Regards

Garry

Seen comizo up to 14lb but have fished with lads who have caught them up to nearly 26lb and have seen pics of bigger fish. They are very predatory, bass anglers often hook them on lures and you can catch them on deadbaits. Best time of year to catch them in Extramadura would appear to be winter.

Hi Gary, i fished extramadura for carp a few years ago, where we were fishing when you hooked carp at around 90-100yds out they always came towards you and dropped in the deep water of the old river bed to fight. The chap i was fishing with hit a fish and it just went off like a train further out, through a line of islands where the line parted. It was unstoppable, and carp over 40lb had already been taken. The guides thought that might have been a big comizo. No cats so it certainly wasnt that but might also have been a very large carp, we saw fish well over 50, possibly 60+ swimming around.

Ill pm you my mobile number if you haven't still got it, good chance you'll get on next march time, keep an eye on waiting list around feb onwards! Still been doing abit of barbel fishing but might just be one more trip to emote some bait out of freezer for pike bait space then it'll be full on piking mode, got a few trips to the Anglian water trout res's later this month then a few trips to chew in November to wet the appetite too :)

Seen carp also well over 50 and possibly 60 also, the comizo do fight like hell, i would imagine a 35+ barbel fights loads harder than a similar carp, one day i will hook one:)

The smallhead barbel in Spain actually fight a damn sight harder than the Comizos in my opinion. The first run of a comizo can be awesome but they soon give up.

Thats interesting Tony, I know you have caught plenty of both. Not sure how big the smallheads grow to or indeed what other species I caught in Extramadura, for some reason I thought they were the same species as in UK but stand to be corrected.

You don't get Barbus barbus in Spain Garry, the Pyrenees got in the way. The Guadiana system has Comizo, smallhead and Iberian (or common) barbel I believe. It seems to me that comizo and smallhead are the most numerous and hybrids of the two. The smallheads do go well over 20lb they say,..... never caught one that big myself.

Thanks Tony,

for some reason I thought the common barbel was Barbus barbs, can't catch big Comizos so maybe targeting a big small head might be easier……………….:(

The really big fish are not at all common Gary, nor easy to catch. I prefer the river to those huge dams myself.
