Hexagraph

Hi - a rather random question, is there any way to find out what blank/test curve a hexagrams rod is, I have been offered one by an old rod builder friend and have no idea what it is! Thanks

Only way I can think of would be test curve it against another rod with a known TC to see how it compares. I might be wrong and I’ve never owned a hex but I seem to recall that the stated test curve on them was always lower than that of similar actioned regular carbon rod. For example a 1.25lb Hex would be roughly equivalent to a 1.5lb regular carbon blank.

The way I have always understood to ascertain a test curve of a rod is to have the rod butt secured to a horizontal surface , possibly using a clamp on the handle , run a line through the eyes and hang weights onto the end of the line until the tip of the rod is 90 degrees to the rod butt . The weight that does the job is the test curve .

Tip actioned rods bend acuteley , probably the top 3 or 4 feet ,could be even less dependent upon the rods action. Through action rods bend slowly from tip almost righ down to the butt .

Here is a link to how some people do it… I would not myself use the rod vertical method , but thats just me being extra careful .

I am sure other folk on here have different ideas, but with the same result .

David .

If its at a reasonable price grab it, all Hexagraphs are all good if ok for your waters what is your local river? Are you anything to do with Essex Floats?

Hi Colin, just saw your reply, sorry nothing to do with Essex Floats, my friend used to build/repair the rods for Simpsons in Turnford and had a lot of blanks from them when they were taken over by Angling Direct - I have to sort his garage out for him this week - who knows what is hiding in there!

I have a catalogue of Simpsons old Hex range and bought some of the blanks to build for myself to use when Jack dropped the range as they were too expensive

Hi Barry, the rod I have is about 11 1/2ft , I have no idea as to the test curve - it's not light I would say 1.75 or heavy 1.5 does anything in the catalogue sound like that? As a by, having had your blacks from Simpsons do you know Dave Brown (Dave the rod) or Roger who used to build all of Jack's rods?

Hiya Garry,
They/RogerHurst built/ did a range named Perfection Carp rods 11ft 6 in and test curves of 13/4. ,21/4 and 23/4 .
When Jack stopped selling them I bought 2 of each blanks and built them as MK1V look alikes.I still have and use the 21/4s now and again but might sell them soon
