Help with John Wilson rod

Richard Burton

Senior Member
Hello all, some advice / knowledge needed please.

On sorting through some old tackle that belonged to my Dad, I have come across the above, but it looks like a true original by the look of the eyes etc..

Its a John Wilson Avon Quiver 11ft, 1.25 test curve with both quiver tip and Avon top, green blank with hook keeper Model AV110.

The reason I ask if its an original one is because of the eyes on the white tip, they are standard and a fine wire type eye not a modern day lined or ring type eye.

Any help appreciated, thank you Richard.

Richard. I have the same rod. Yes original.

Great for chub fishing. Caught quite a few barbel on it as well.not biggies though . Worth about 40.00.

Richard,

Take a look through this thread here....

www.thepathbythewater.net • View topic - Which John Wilson Avon have I got ?

..and you will see some pictures of mine and also some excellent info from some of the forum regulars on the different versions of the Wilson Avon.

Something of a cult rod now, the earlier versions. I've had three different versions and I really hate to say it - Masterline have proved to be an excellent company, customer service wise, even going as far as replacing me with a whole, brand new rod in exchange for my snapped tipped MK 5 (I think) that was at least 5 years old - but the later the version the more pony'n'trap the rod is.... at least in my experience.

Top rod in its day................... trouble is its day has not quite gone yet.

Excellent for chubb/perch fishing.

There is a school of thought that as the rod has "progressed" through its various incarnations, the "progress" has been more aimed at improving the balance sheet of the production company, rather than improving the balance of the rod, so to speak.

The grey blanked one that Masterline very kindly sent to replace my green blanked one is not even a patch on the one is was supposed to replace. The lovely though action of the earlier rods seems completely absent and instead it's a rather tippy afair, made worse if you bother to use the silly dolly-butt extension that they supply.

Thanks Haydon, mine has a part black handle and the rest is plain blank with black running reel fittings, also it has a light greyish rod bag with a single label at the bottom end.
There is no single "C" after the AV110 it just says Carbon

Sounds like the very first one, Richard. Mine has a full cork handle which makes it as a second version. Either way the blank is the same and it's just the hardware that differs.

I think I'll be using mine for some winter chub and perch fishing. The rod is capable of much more though. I took my first double figure barbel on my old green one on the very day and after the Avon tip section snapped, fishing the river Gt. Ouse in full flood conditions and forced to use the quiver tip. I sat there with the rod fairly well bent to full test curve all day from the flow until I caught the barbel. I wouldn't say it was the most well balanced tussle I've had with a fish but nevertheless I landed it.

An acquaintance of mine also managed to take a 24lb common on his.
