Hello from a Yorkshire Angler looking for a French 'Angle'.

Hello all

I've just joined, I'm looking to connect with anglers with experience of French rivers in pursuit of our beloved Barbel.

I've been mainly fishing Yorkshire rivers over the last few years chasing Barbel ,Chub et al (odd foray onto the Wye and Severn aside). I do also venture further afield when looking to get my string pulled from a toothy Esox ,Wels Catfish. Recently Norwegian Halibut and its salty friends too. I'll lure fish , float fish , feeder , spin and fly .......what takes my fancy really.

So, the ask.........................

I have a 3 week trip around France penciled in for May, my Barbel rods will be stashed in my campervan. (I may sneak a pike rod in too but that is a separate challenge ) The first part of the trip will be down through the Ardennes region and heading to Alsace . Highly likely we will head across to the Loire valley too before heading home .

The first rivers that spring to mind are:-

-Meuse
-ill
-Sauer

Other recommendations ? I'm not necessarily looking for lumps, consistent sport would be great.

Any advice would be gratefully received for general starting points near to camping spots / Aires. Public fishing or day ticket perhaps?

I would also appreciate some guidance on carte de peche. It looks like id need a 12 month licence to cover 3 weeks. Is this regional or national.

To the potential Forum ' bouncers and Golems' :) . Yes, I will be trawling the archives too to see where these questions have cropped up before, Thanks for the advice in advance.

Warm regards

Nige

welcome Nige .... if you search back through the threads for a few weeks you will see that we have two new French members who have both been very forward in sharing info on the rivers they fish etc. Hopefully they'll look in and reply to you.

Hi Nigel,

I've never fished the Meuse, but it has a nice population of barbel. The fishing spots aren't too difficult to access.

Regarding the Sauer River, you can't fish for barbel there between March 1st and June 1st. This river is located in Luxembourg, so the permit is different from the one for France.

For a 3-week fishing trip, you can indeed get a monthly permit. The permit is national, covering all public waters.
Be careful not to fish in private areas. You'll need a specific permit from the local fishing association (AAPPMA) to fish those areas.

You simply need to check on the cartesdepeche website whether the fishing association (AAPPMA) you choose participates in the reciprocal fishing agreement. If it does, you will be able to fish on all public waters with your permit (this is a bit of a simplification, but start from this principle).

But if I remember correctly, the Meuse is mostly public waters, and any permit will be ok.

Thank you for the prompt and detailed reply Anthony, cheers

Thanks for adding the link Gavin, i have been trawling the forum, but not got to that yet. Much appreciated. Cheers
No problem.

There’s also a good Facebook group called Wild River Barbel Bait which predominantly focuses on French / Dutch river fishing.

There’s some good stuff on YouTube too - but you can’t really tell where about’s they are fishing unless you recognise the spots. Still worth watching though for tips around baiting and baits.
