Harrison 4 peice Avon

Morning chaps.

Looking for some user feedback from anglers that have used the above rod please.

You know. The silly questions on its limitations, action & playing ability, and the optimum casting weights blar blar... 🤣👍

I have the Peregrine version, in a Paul4Barbel centrepin configuration. Only used it several times for close in work, taking Barbel to just over 10lb, which it’s more than capable of dealing with.

On previous threads, people have confirmed that they‘ve landed some very big fish on this rod.

I tend to keep mine in the boot, if I’m out lure fishing, but then fancy a go for Barbel after dark.

It's definitely more powerful than the standard 12' 2 piece Avon. For me the action seems a bit firmer and I reckon it suits typical 10lb line (0.29-0.30). I've not done any proper overhead casting with mine, but you can underarm lob 3oz if you need to.

I reckon the TC is somewhere around 1lb 8oz - 1lb 10oz.

In normal river conditions you should be able to land pretty much any barbel that swims.

The rod is about 1.5lc tc, nice through action. But the tip is stiffer than torrix and chimera, due to this reason, I mainly used it for live baiting perch, I hope I can give it a try this winter for ledgering. I have no doubt it can case 2oz to a good distance, but not sure about the 3oz.
BTW, let me know when you are in Oxford, I can show you the rod.

Hi Julian
I did have one of these 4 piece Harrison Avon rods, it is slightly stiffer than the two piece Avon because of the extra joints, it can be folded down into two pieces with the tackle and rig attached, it is a matt finish, a great rod.
I hope to receive this rod back in my possession when my mate is finished with it.

Actually Huanzhou. That would be quite handy! Good shout mate!
Yeah I was told it was a good rod with sensitive tip ideal for flicking out light weights and more finesse sort of fishing including link legering and touch legering etc etc.
I was highly suspect about this, but didn't say anything as I have never handled one in person.

I'm already thinking it's not a rod that will serve my purpose. 👍😊

Emmm, it is a good rod. But IMHO, it is not a rod for light weight and finesses fishing. It is more like a light barbel rod I think. It landed me zander/pike to 8,9 pound while perch fishing. Although I didn’t tried, but I doubt it can register shiny bites from chub roach etc…maybe I should give it a try at some point.

I think Jo mentioned above that it had more backbone than the standard 2 piece Avon, which is what I've got already.

I beleive all my standard avons came with the spliced quivers from Harrisons, and I want that rod without the spliced tips, (just the two piece blank in other words with a sensitive tip)

Mick Holgate Chub Specialist is as close to perfection that I've come too, & for what I want from the rod, but Harrisons won't build/supply the blanks associated with that rod as they'd obviously would need a load ordered to make it worth their while.

If they released the blank that Mick built his chub rod on, they'd sell themselves!!

Can always revert to drennan avons, but just love the Harrison blanks. I find it amazing that Harrison don't do old school traditional avons.

I'm a fussy old ba&#-Rd I know, but I know what I want from a rod. The search continues😂

I had one made up by Dave Lumb around three years ago. A great through action, and plenty of backbone - though I have no other Harrisons to compare it to. I've landed barbel to 14lb with ease (from a swollen Dove) and reckon it's perfect as a travel rod, to stick in the boot.

Davies tackle in Christchurch are still doing their Avon specials and Avon special stepped up rods according to their website. They also have the four piece on there but currently are not accepting internet orders unfortunately.

I know exactly what you are talking about and I think I am on the same boat as well. A normal Avon blank with sensitive tip. I am already considering to try the old fibreglass Avon rod now. The best thing I found so far is the 11ft chimera Avon, I don't know how it compares to Mick's blank and the standard Avon (Bob told me they are very similar?), but when I used it ledgering for roach and chub, it did the job well.

Does the Drennan Avon has a more sensitive tip than Harrison Avon? I suppose you are talking about the series 7 not the current specialist rod, right?

I beleive it is Huanzhou. I might look at that 11' 1lb 4oz

Is it a chimera blank or a straight Harrison Rich?
The chimera Avon is a relatively new blank

I’m talking about the original Harrison Avon that’s been around ages and still around.
It’s 11 ft 2 piece and rated to 1.4oz tc but I’d say it was more like 1.25. It’s a beautifully soft action right through from tip to butt
Really classic Avon action and feel

If I had to pick a well known rod it’s very similar too in feel and action, it would be the original mk1 daiwa powermesh

That's unbelievable Richard! That daiwa powermesh is exactly the rod I'm comparing my memories with! 😁

Do you know any builders that can build me one, I'm starting the search?👍

I believe these are blanks Richard mentioned.
