George Monbiot River Wye

Thanks Les for that link. Just watched it until Charlotte Church started on something strange!

Frightening what is happening, especially the lack of action by those with authority!

Now I live in France I am lucky to benefit from a system that seems to work in keeping their rivers healthy. I do not grudge my 100 euros a year "Carte de Peche" cost in the least. I feel the rivers are being looked after well!

Hope the UK gets to grips with this. Too crowded and no political will to improve the situation! What a depressing mess! :(

Good to see this getting some more exposure. Although it's had a fair bit recently this gov't seem to be the last to catch on to anything that doesn't involve doing favours for their friends....

Some excellent coverage of the issues. I could have done without the contribution of Benjamin Zephaniah and that god awful song from Charlotte Church but the rest was generally spot on.

For those that haven’t seen its still available to watch online. Rivercide have published the following which I agree with entirely:

5 THINGS THE GOVERNMENT MUST DO
  1. FINE THE POLLUTERS
    per litre of pollution discharged.
  2. FUND THE ENFORCERS
Double the budgets of our environmental protection agencies
  3. MONITOR THE MESS
Install continuous pollution monitoring on key rivers, with live data displayed publicly online.
  4. BUFFER THE BANKS
Make farm subsidies conditional on creating wild corridors along rivers and streams.
  5. LET US TEST
Launch standardised water sampling protocol so local citizens can collect polluted water for legal actions.

Yes it could have done without the Poem and Song from Benjamin and Charlotte. I liked the Wharf people getting Bathing Water Status on their local river and forcing it to be cleaned up. I will be looking into that and testing for E. coli. I get hundreds of people swimming in the bit of river I look after. Bucks council will not put up signs informing the locals of the issues maybe E.coli will force them. I would not mind the public intrusion on my bit of river if it went with clean water. Sadly Funding the Enforcement will be wasted with this group of people in charge of the EA.

I think the Charlotte and Benjamin stuff just helps to make this appeal to a wider group of people so that is no bad thing. Actions points 1, 3, 4 and 5 :), but 2 is a bit questionable.
