Fox Bob James centrepin - Mandela moment?

Hi all

I've been doing a bit of research into some of my centrepins today, purely out of interest, and I got to my Youngs Bob James centrepin (Y2080, with the closed back) and remembered that they also did an open backed lightweight version (Y2084SL). I THEN remembered Fox later released practically identical versions of both reels with the BJ branding but under the Fox name. Except when I started looking into the Fox reels, all I could find was the open backed lightweight version.

I was sure they also did an equivalent of the Y2080 and even seem to remember handling one in a tackle shop a few years ago (after I'd already procured the Youngs one) to compare the two, but now I'm wondering if I'm going mad and that Fox never did a Y2080 equivalent.

What started out as a little bit of light interest has now got me questioning my sanity!

So am I experiencing a Mandela moment with this?

I have the Fox 5". It's essentially a larger copy of what is currently known as the Super Lightweight. I don't recall Fox doing a version of the Bob James (sold backplate) reel.

They didn't, they just did the 5inch ventilated back model (same as your one) and as far as I know those reels were made in china or some other foreign country.

I have only ever seen the Fox BJ5 version and it’s a cracking reel.
Bob James had his name on another pin which I think came before both the youngs and Fox. That was solid back 4.5inch

Yeah, the original is the old Arnold Kingpin and the Relum is, I believe, identical in every way except it was made in Eastern Europe or something and didn't have any involvement from BJ himself. I have the Relum and it's built like a tank. By far the heaviest and solidest centrepin I own for sure.

Heh, I've just clocked that I asked exactly the same question on here a few years ago, and the subsequent discussion followed pretty much the same as it has here.

So I'm definitely losing my marbles!
