fly fishing for all fish...

Does anyone else use the fly rod for more than just Trout?

Although i dip my toes in all disciplines of our sport(coarse, game, sea) i struggle more and more these days to leave the house without a fly rod. I'm currently on 18 UK species to my own flies and cant wait for the rivers to open again and get down to the seaside to try and up the count:rolleyes:

Just wondered if i was the only one here, as i've notice the odd Trouty thread?:) if it tickles your fancy also have a look at me Blog, it's mostly all wild brownies at the mo but will be more varied soon...

Graham , love the blog , it looks like you are really into your fly fishing! This has been my first season fly fishing and quite frankly i am hooked ! I have spent a session a week exploring the river Usk , i will be going again tomorrow to catch whatever i can and always returning them to be caught again !

Graham,
Lovely blog ! And some fantastic pictures !!!!!!!

I too love small stream fishing, but mainly of the Coarse kind ! I know Adam and I have a shared interest in a certain river !

Will keep looking in now !

Regards Paul M.

Certainly something that I plan to relive from very early days.
Got the fly bug somewhat.

All sorts of possibilities with a careful, imitative approach, most coarse fish species for sure, plenty of accsessable salty ones too.
Once caught 5 decent tench in consecutive casts, using a nymph from a trout water, a real shock, but next trip caught 3 more and a carp, bream from a Thames weirpool, loads of chub and perch. Going to try for a barbel this season.

Thanks for the comments guys, it's nice to know i'm not the only one!:D

James, i see you're in Glos, me too, fish any local waters?

Paul, i've walked and fished the river you talk of, a fantastic place with MANY surprises:)

Peter, i too am yet to hook a barbel on the fly, had a few close encounters though. As you say there's not really anything that cant be caught on flies, i love Bass, Pollack and mullet in the summer when i can get down to cornwall, and hope to crack wrasse this year. On my local river i've had Chub to over 4lb, Perch to 3lb 8oz and Pike to 16lb, as well as roach and dace etc which keep the reactions lively:D

Geoff, thanks very much, i mainly use a D80

Cheers,

Graham

Great pics and an interesting project. Most of my 'other' species have been caught by accident and so far, my attempts to catch a barbel has given me just one foul hooked fish. Mind you, a 4lb fish with a nymph in the tail, goes well on a weight 5 rod :)

I think that you could write a very readable book Graham, one that would appeal to a wide range of anglers.

Graham,

Interesting stuff, and well-written blog too.

I was thinking of trying for other species on the fly too, but my impulse-purchase Seer 11ft 7-weight rod my be a little over-gunned!

I'd still like to try, but I'm looking out for a lighter, shorter rod before taking on the smaller streams round here.

I'd be interested in reading a write up of one of your coarse sessions fishing for chub, dace, etc. I'm new to the fly game and have no idea about fly patterns etc.

Cheers,

R.

Thanks for all the very kind comments guys:eek:

Dave, you're very kind, i'd really love to write a book and have material kept back for such a project, hopefully one day i can realise the dream;)

Robin, come the 16th i'll be out most weekends after the coarse fish, stay tuned on the blog and hopefully i can help you out...

Cheers,

Graham

Graham ,i've only caught a few coarse fish on fly tackle (mostly chub ,the odd carp ) last being a gudgeon out of a trout lake by accident ,but have been inspired too try for more this year after we had a pressentation by "scateboard dave" he specialises in fishing for coarse fish on the fly ,i can highly recommend catching one of his pressentations ,plus hes a really great guy and fantastic fly tyer of coarse flys.

Hi Steven, i've spoken to Dave on a couple of other forums and he is a very knowledgable chap indeed, with some great catches to his name.

I just love fishing with a fly rod for whatever is infront of me, i think for me has become less about what i catch and how big it is and more about the enjoyment of the method used to catch it, dont get me wrong i've caught double figure fish from river, lake and shore on bait and still "dabble" from time to time, i guess it started with centrepins, trotting and touch ledgering and the feeling of "envolvement" it brings, then onto fooling fish with flies, i know it's not everyones cup of tea and that's fine, i'm just a sucker for it:D

All the best,

Graham

am going to have a serious bash at the bass on the fly in cornwall throughout the summer and autumn. already tied up all the flies.
Of to scotland for a salmon (hopefully!) on sunday for a week. looking forward to it.

George, good luck with the Salmon, it's generally needed:D

If you've not caught Bass on the fly before you're on for a treat, if you've ever caught decent Perch you'll find the fight is very similar, great sport if the conditions will allow a light rod!:)

Was out on the river again today, managed 20 Chub, 10 Perch and a handfull of Roach and Dace, Happy days:cool:

Cheers,

Graham
