Fluoro/Braid Combi Rigs...

Good Morning All,

Lost a good fish on opening day due to a break in my combi rig the fluoro came back showing a clean break, looked like the braid could have cut through the fluoro. I was using 10lb. Trilene Fluoro to Gardner Trickster 15lb. Braid....What are you guys using and how many turns up and down etc...Are you better off with a thicker Fluoro?

Morning John, having been bitten in similar fashion last year I now use a small swivel between the two. Palomer knot for the fluoro side.

I tried using a small rig ring but found the braid kept getting cut off by the ring even after trying a few knots. Went back to Gavin's set up and use a little metal putty over the swivel to pin the rig down.

10lb flouro far too weak imo. I wouldn't even use that straight through to the hook for barbel. I use 20lb flouro and an allbright knot to the braid. I've caught literally hundreds of barbel on it and I've never been broken by one. It's like tow rope.

20lb flouro is much heavier so it affords a better presentation imo because it hugs the river bed more, out of the way of the barbel.

Try it ;)

John.
I've mentioned before the problem with braid mainline and either mono or fluro shortish hooklinks.

10lb hooklink line is just not upto the pressure excerted because the braid doesn't stretch on a vicious take or large fish.
Go back to your PP hooklink or use a small swivel as a link going through twice or as Graham suggests.

Shame.

Bang you were taught well lol

Graham ive had plenty of fish on a 10BS fluoro hooklink in the past no problem but your idea of stepping up the fluoro BS will be my next move, dont think that i will be 20BS though

Lads the small swivel as an alternative might be worth a try out as well..

What combinations are you using for fluoro/braid PM me if you prefer....

Similar here 15lb fluorocarbon 12lb braid albright knot solid.

Just dab the knot with super glue, never slip then.

Lads i want to thank you for all your suggestions and thoughts, i shall be stepping up the BS of my fluoro...I have always gone with the 5 turns down and 5 back myself....No i wont be using any superglue on the knot....

Try a back to back grinner knot, easy to tie and very strong! Usually 5 turns but maybe 1 more turn with the thinner material.
