Float Rod For Barbel

Stephen Scaysbrook

Senior Member
I have a greys Prodigy TX 12ft Specialist Float.
Would this be OK for trotting for Barbel with main lines in the 7/8lb and hook links of 5/6lb breaking strains.
Any other suggestions on rods and reels would be helpful. Ive never trotted for barbel before so all help very much appreciated.
Thank You
Stephen

The 12' TX Specialist Float rod is rated for mainlines from 2-10lb, so on that front it should be fine. I'd generally consider a 12' rod to be a little short for trotting, where extra length pays dividends when it comes to float control. However, if the river you are fishing is relatively narrow, shallow, overgrown or you are wading, 12' might be quite adequate.

My biggest concern on the Prodigy TX float rods would be their action. I remember them being a relatively through action, not the fast action I'd prefer for trotting. However, actions are entirely subjective, plenty of people don't like the fast, tippy actions I prefer for trotting.

The strength of a trotting rod for barbel is another point of contention for many. Much depends on your skill level and experience coupled with the nature of the water you are fishing and the average size of the fish. Some folks use rod and line combinations that others consider rather light. Others use much heavier, quite rare, specialist type float rods, and heavy lines, that some consider to be excessively strong.

I've got the 13' Prodigy TXL float and find it well suited to trotting the Severn coupled with 8lb main and 6lb hook link. I prefer a through action rod and this has plenty of power all the way through.
