Welcome to International Fly Fishing, Mark - Brands, Big Business, Destinations, Client Bed Nights and Show Business - http://tinyurl.com/64a27vs

Only the other week I had an unsolicited email from an upmarket "sporting agent" offering me a trip to one of my old rivers in India - pennies then, $6,500 plus God knows what extras now. Then there were the juicy trip reports of groups fishing the now lodged-up and eye-wateringly priced-up and by-the-backdoor privatized South American sea-trout rivers (entire ones) that I once fished for free, now for weekly rates that some Brits and many middle-class Argentine fly-fisher locals don't earn in a year ... and as for the ordinary Joes who used wander the rivers with a spinning rod...

Hi Mark

I am going to Cuba at Easter. This is a holiday with Mrs Reed to celebrate a big anniversary so I won't be fishing every day. I have managed to wangle a guided day after bonefish at Las Salinas. The tour company organised it for me so I am not sure how much it added to the cost of then holiday but £150 was mentioned. I am also planning to do a bit of freelance fishing wherever I can. If you are ever near Reading pop into Sportfish at Theale. Some of the guys there have a lot of experience of fishing in Cuba and gave me some valuable advice. Might also be worth posting a question on this forum http://www.ukswff.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=31&sid=973390f14db47edbb4f809586ceeb84c.

Just returned from my Cuba holiday. We had a fantastic time and my day spent after bonefish will live with me for ever. I spent the day with a guide who propelled our skiff for two hours in the blazing sun so that we could fish what was pretty virgin water in the Las Salinas reserve. Once we started fishing, the guide would call the direction and distance of fish that he had spotted. For the first hour I couldn't even see them - this is despite a good pair of sunglasses and years of experience of spotting barbel. Eventually I started to get my eye in and could begin to see the fish he was calling. I promptly scared them off with my clumsy casting but with practice I began to put the fly where it needed to be. The first fish only weighed about a pound and a half but put up a spectacular fight. I caught five more, the biggest of which just made 4lb. This fish took the entire fly line out and tore off an alarming amount of backing. I have never experience a fight like it and the speed and power of these fish needed to be experienced to be believed. The fish coupled with the incredible landscape and wildlife made for an unforgettable day. I have a direct contact e-mail address for my guide which may be a cheaper way of organising such a trip. PM me if you want any further info.

Glad you had a good time Steve, I'm off to Cayo Guillermo on Sunday with my wife. Mainly for a bit of sun and snorkelling, but also packed the travel rods and hoping to tangle with some action around the Melia pier and the bridge channel.
