i am thinking of getting centrepin reel reelfor use on the local rivers i fish, although i have read & have been told by many what make of reel to get, i'm little bit lost as to what make of rod, (test curve, legnth etc).so what do you think,

i have read the paul whiteing thread on his rods (in the classified pages) but to fair i don't know whether i want to spend that much on a rod for now.

may also add if you want to get into centrepins click the link below it is superb, thanks for that paul.

Neil, there are hundreds too choose from mate, from 9ft stalker to 15ft trotting rods all designed for barbel and all with different price tags.

I would look for something around 11-12ft, between 1.5 and 1.75tc. I would look at the classifieds on here and other barbel forums, they are barbel fishermen selling barbel gear after all.

But it really depends on what sort of river you are fishing and what sort of budget you have mate.

Hi Neil,

I assume that you are meaning a rod for trotting with a centre pin? You did not make that clear fella, as a lot of people use a pin for bottom fishing as well.

If it is for trotting, then why not try the carp match rod you have and see how you get on? It is intended for fish that tug back like barbel, so power wise can't be far out. Well worth a try I would have thought, rather than lay out 'loadsamoney' when you may already have the tool for the job.

Cheers, Dave.

Hi Neil, whatever you are going to use a pin for it is great fun and need not be expensive! Today I had a nice Hants Avon Barbel (8 1/2 lb) on an old Shimano Hyperloop Barbel rod which cost £49.99 and a Okuma Aventa Pro pin £80 using link ledgered Elipse pellet. You really can't beat the sound of a screaming pin when you get a ripper Barbel bite !!!
TFG gear are currently flogging one of there pins through Fishtec for about £50, might be worth a look!

Good stuff, Keith - you've summed up what 'pin fishing is about: screaming ratchet, madly bent rod, "She-hit!" lots of fun - not posing, poncing about, reel model and money.

I must confess that while trotting for chub on the Foss (v. small river - 10ft wide, 2ft deep) I happened to hook a nice fish just as a family out walking had stopped opposite me. "Oooh, look Tarquin, he's caught one". Well, I just had to let it take line with the ratchet on, didn't I? Several times! Show-boating, I think is the term. :)

Admirable, even 9/10ths right, young Robin. Just find the time, next time, to do what I do: reach for One's Gun.

What Paul Boote said is spot on. It is back to basics fun and enjoyment.

Neil, for bottom fishing any rod you normally use will do the job, however for trotting I use a power float rod with a through action made for carp , and have also used a John Wilson Avon Quiver with the Avon top and the 2ft extension that takes it to a 13ft, 1.5lb TC.

All the best
Colin
