First Barbel on the ‘pin

Treated myself to a JW Young “Rolling Pin” last year — not exactly cheap, but I’ve always had a soft spot for anything hand-made and I’ve always believed that if you take good care of your gear, it should last a lifetime.

Over the past year, I’ve mainly been using it for Chub fishing on the W.Avon, and after landing a nice Barbel last week, I decided to give it another outing today.

I’ve completely changed my approach to fishing this year — these days I only head out for the last few hours of daylight, and only when the river’s on the drop.

So, I went out today around 3:45pm and had this one in the net by 4:15pm. I’m not big on photographing fish, I like to keep them out of the water for as little time as possible, but I couldn’t resist a quick snap of this one.

What made it even sweeter was catching it on my JW Young Ray Walton 11ft Barbel Rod, the one I managed to persuade a mate to sell me last year.

It is certainly fun catching them on a pin isn’t it.
