Hi,been to my local tackle shop to day to pick a few bits up to get ready for my first barbel trip[not decided which rod yet] and from fishing the odd river in winter for pike were ive used up to 5oz of lead to hold bottom ive gone for the korum 5oz feeders is this a bit excessive and will a 1.75tc rod handle this when full of groundbait and pellets .thanks ste.

Steve,
You'll get loads of opinions on this one !
Is 5ozs excessive ? Hmmmmmmmmm for most rivers, in what is accepted as 'Summer Flows' then probably yes !
Some people will tell you that they can hold bottom on a flooded river with 2ozs ! Well, fair play to them ! I've never been able to manage it !
On certain stretches of rivers such as The Wye or Severn, you may well need around 4ozs even in summer.........(that's IMHO). But in general, even on the bigger rivers such as these, 2ozs will suffice in a lot of places.
You don't say which river you are thinking of fishing, but contacting a regular on here may help !
Rod test curves can be deceptive as the action is far more important ! You will get a barrage of answers................To me no one is 'right or wrong' ! It's just down to personal preference ! If you have fished for larger fish (carp, pike, tench etc.) before, then you may well have an idea of the rod 'type' you prefer. This will obviously affect your choice........
I prefer a 'Through Action' (I-Power, Drennan Specialist etc.) And find 'Tippy' rods such a The Torrix, 'Feel Wrong' ! Others will favour these rods and the way they convey their 'Power'.
Like I say it's very personal !
I would ceratinly favour a 2lbstc rod for lobbing 5-6ozs feeders !
Finally, look on here and ask around (or make your own) for large feeders ! The Korum ons are great, but on a bad day some where like The Wye, it could cost you a small fortune !!!!!!!!

Hope this helps, but is no way definative, you will get many other opinions..........

Good luck and feel free to ask !

Regards Paul M.

Like Paul has replied 2lb tc would be more suited to 5oz feeders I use a Korum Neoteric which has both 1.75 and 2.2tc tips. I am confident of chucking out 3 to 4oz leads all day long with the 1.75 and 5 to 6oz feeders with the 2.2. Also mentoned by Paul my rods bend right the way though which always gives me confidence when lobbing big feeders maybe its just something I am comfortable with. I also use a homemade cage feeder with no lead from time to time which holds up to a quarter of a pint of scolded pellet this can come in handy on big hungry venues and its a beast to cast but the rods manage it.

Interesting comments about the "bendiness" of rods.

I too prefer the i-Power to the Torrix, and for the same reason.

Regarding feeders - it depends on conditions. I have, once, tried fishing the Swale in flood on a particularly fast, narrow section. I lobbed 6oz of lead upstream, and I swear it was 30 yds down stream before it hit the bottom!!

Thanks again for the replys i think i will go for the korum rod with two tips 1.75tc 2.00tc and then i can use different feeders to suit each rod and quickness of flow, ive only ever fished rivers in winter and ones tidal so ive always used 4oz up to 6oz leads.I will be fishing the yorkshire rivers ouse, wharfe, and ure if i get brave maybe the swale ,like i said this is a big learning curve and to be honest cant wait to catch my first barbel.

Hi Steve, the 5oz feeders are not excessive at all, as what you want is the feeder to not move in the flow, if it moves it snags imo. Beware of the korum as a fellow bfwer used these feeders last year, and they were breaking regularly, he even sent them back to korum for a refund of new feeders, they broke too. Hopefully korum have changed the design a little. As for rods, that will chuck 5oz, most can chuck that with ease 35yds, the power for the chuck comes from the butt section. Any further, any heavier be careful, because if it breaks which some do, you wont get a refund if you tell them what you have been doing. As for rods, the Neoterics are very good, but an alternative is the wychwood maximiser.

Both are great rods, hope you have a very good season and lots Barbs.

I have Greys Prodigys and X-Flites but when it comes to chucking really big feeders about I'll drag out the Korum Twin Tips.
