Emailing tackle shops

Chris Jones

Senior Member
I'm currently in a position where I can't ring a tackle shop with an enquiry. Because of that I've tried to use email. I've sent emails to several tackle shops over the last couple of months. Out of all I've sent I've had responses back from just two, tackle2U.com and Nathans of Derby. Unfortunately neither had what I was looking for but at least they bothered and it was appreciated. Is there any real point in the vast majority of tackle shops having email contacts or website contact pages? Many seem to lack the inclination to actually use them. I also have my doubts as to the point of many shops websites, they seem to list reams of gear that they don't actually stock. Even worse when they don't keep them up to date and list loads of obsolete items that they couldn't even order in.

Are many tackle shops still living in the past and not really embracing modern technology? Or are they simply ignoring questions that will probably not lead to a sale as they don't have/can't get the item being enquired about?

the main reason must be that once they have a computer in the shop they get an automatic email address, then when someone looks for gear in their area they pop up.
most of em dont give flyin toss about you unless your spending money

Yes, and some of them have shut down as they couldn't compete with the internet shops which don't have the overheads a tackle shop incurs. I recently tried to make a purchase online from a tackle shop found on google, after a couple of days i recieved an e-mail from the former owner explaining the shop had recently closed and he couldn't complete my order, not really a problem for me - but sad to here of another tackle shop gone. He had obviously tried to embrace modern technology but couldn't make it work, at least he had the decency to contact me and let me know. You never know Chris - you may have e-mailed a few shops that don't even exist anymore!

Hi Chris, try Ted Carters, they seem to keep me well updated online. If you need anything you know where to send it...

the tackle box came back to me within a hour about a stock inquiry, very good shop.

Agreed Jon - great online shop/service, if you ever find yourself in Preston pop in as the walk in experience is even better than the online one. I would also recomend The Tackle Box in Dartford - excellent service.

Ah my 100th post....if you have a website and email based on e commerce business or to complement your retail business you have to service it as much as you would face to face or by telephone otherwise what is the point?
If you ignore the email that is still the equivelant of ignoring someone in the shop or never answering the phone ( ok at least a reply within 24 hours).

However we rely too much on email and other digital means, sometimes we need to pick up the phone at the very least and have some human interaction it does help.

Banter and the human mind is quicker than replying to endless emails.

This is not a critisism on you Chris but all most of us are guilty of cut and paste emails to numerous clients/friends/tackles shps etc

How many did you email Chris as matter of interest........how many times are we told to we have to support the poor old tackle shop owner.

Matchman Supplies on Ella Road in West Bridgeford, Nottingham? Another excellent shop offering great service - never tried their online service but spent several years living very close by so didn't have to! :)

Hi Adam

Yes - Matchman Supplies - they are excellent. Actually I just ordered a hold-all from them - checked first by mail it was in stock. The chap who runs it - Tim Aplin - is very good - will phone to check if you want an order splitting etc.
