ELSTON

The more smaller the barbel are the better the condition of the river. Big female Barbel although great to catch often are the result of a declining population...gone are the days when rivers were full of feisty smaller males.
sadly. Sorry but the obsession with bigger better barbel is disguising the real issues.
We all fall into this trap Lee, and I have just watched a Drennan new vid on an angler challenging himself to catch a double barbel from 40 or so rivers in the country, great viewing I admit but for me the smaller Barbel he caught from the Wye were the stars, and the future too.

I'm sorry but I'm not falling into any trap.
Iv fished the river on and off in different locations for a number of yrs now and had plenty and I mean plenty of fish from young juveniles to over 9lb. I'm really happy catching that stamp of fish.
Having recently joining Elston my question was are there many doubles about.....of course I'd love to catch one.....but I'm certainly not falling into a trap...just mearly asking a question to curb my curiosity!!!!!!

Sorry if came over a bit OTT it wasn't" aimed at you just really something I feel a bit strong about that my local rivers anyway are almost bereft of barbel. Very much quantity over quality I would hope for in the future to give the species a future.
I understand the buzz you get from a clonker...but love the days fishing we used to have with multiple bites.
Anyay back to the footie😉

Had my 2 best Ribble barbel off Elston .have to get through the mid size barbel on the Ribble and plenty showing under 2lb .put a big chunk of meat on one rod and leave it fishing. The peg with the rope I showed your mate is a good place for a decent fish and the peg on the bend you fish produce good fish
