EA recreation Policy

Hello Chaps,

How many of you are aware of the new policy of the EA towards recreational sports in rivers, below is their policy, It is causing some conflict on my local river Dearne and as such we are campaigning against it.

The Environment Agency’s Access policy states that it will “promote sustainable increased access where it will not adversely impact on existing uses and users, or the economic, environmental and conservation value of the site, and associated area, now or in the future. Subject to resources, we will encourage access where managed solutions can be found to remove adverse impacts.”

As Dearne anglers we have to now put up with a new 45 acre lake adjacent to the river which the canoe club wish to use for all their activities. They are activley looking to gain access from the lake itself into the river thereby destroying easy access swims.

any help would be good

Hi , Andy , yes the angling trust are aware of the issues on the Dearne , im a individual member and a fellow angler Martin Read from Rotherham represents us at the meetings.

As Dearne anglers we are not anti canoeists at all , we know there is no room for both anglers and canoeists on such a small river , its only 12-15yards wide. slightly wider in some places.

up until the creation of this lake and club canoes on the dearne were virtually non existant, now it could cause real conflict.

the club in question is.

"Anglers' concerns about the impact of other users on their sport will naturally be considered."

well, that would be a first then, on yer Nelly.

David the fact is, the EA seem hell bent on implemeting defra policy of access for all on any water irrespective of what already exists.

id love to know why this is, an angling trust rep informed me that the post of EA recreation officer didnt exist until about 3 years ago.

it seems that now they created a new post they have to ensure it works.
