I would say no simply on the grounds that if the tubing were to lay over a larger stone or bit of reed it would be like a flag waving in the wind.
But you never know try it in a clear margin see how it looks
Are you doing this to help pin the hook length down? If so, my observation would be that, in genenral, I am not sure you need to go this far as there are easier ways of achieving this aim (sinking braid/mono/fluro, using sinkers etc). Not sure how barbel would respond to the feel of it if they were grubbing about and bumped into the tubing. I am not a fan of long hook lengths so prefer to use shorter ones (12 inches say), a pallatrax stone and then tubing or some other leader material (I dont use leadcore though) above the stone if I am anxious to have a line free zone in and around the bait etc. Depends on the river and conditions too of course.
why not, only a bit bigger diameter than coated braid and people catch using that!
Barbel IMO spook off the line because they can't see it, if they can see it they won't associate it with danger. Plenty of twigs, weed stalk etc... litter the bottom
Depends on your reasons ! If it's to fish a 'snag pit' then I'd say tray and draw them out........
If it's a try at a different presentation then why not !?!?!? You may well be suprised !
well chris, i think the barbel would spook on it, because the hook, wouldnt behavour the same as with mono or even braid,, but if you were to use a hingde fluro hook lenght with the last 3 inchs of braid and a bit of rig putty were the fluro joins the braid
and masked the hook rubber caster, then i think you would stand alot better chance of landing fish, depending on the river levels
Read "Quest For Barbel" by Trefor West and Toney Miles and they tell about catching Barbel amongst 'the onions' (rushes) by threading their line through a real reed with the lead at the base of it and a short hook length with very good results because as Mark says "fish for them where they least expect it" and you will get results.
