I've always used hair bands borrowed (stolen) from the wife. But the cheap thin ones get over stretched quickly and become useless. The thicker ones are better but are more expensive and are not so easily 'borrowed'. It's also a minor faff doubling or trippling them over so the grip the rod tightly enough.
I have come up with a simple solution involving bungee cord and sprung toggles. The best part is you can get the components for a near endless supply of rod bands for £8 from amazon. You just need to cut to cord to length, seal the ends and tie an over hand knot.
