Day Ticket Stretch near Witney Oxfordshire

Senior Member
Hello All,

I'm off to Brize Norton on a course next month, will be staying in Witney for a week....

I know there's plenty of rivers in the area, and one through Witney itself,so does anyone know or can anyone put me onto a day/week ticket stretch not to far and good for some Barbel fishing.....

Andy

Never fished that area, is it that bad, looks like there's plenty of rivers, maybe just some decent river fishing Pin work will do.....?

There used to be some wonderful barbel fishing on the area of the confluence of the Thames and the Windrush, with good swims on both rivers. Back then day tickets were available from the Rose Revived pub, and it is just up the road from Witney.

However, that was many moons ago, and I have heard a whisper that it has since switched from day ticket to syndicate  Worth finding out the true situation, because it was great fishing when I haunted it's banks a good few years back.

Cheers, Dave.

Nice place Witney, and the River Windrush is a smashing chalk stream that is not noted for it's barbel though, the only day ticket stretch I know of is Burford Town and you used to buy the DT from the sewing shop on the High Street. Good Chub etc on the stick, but no Barbel.
You have the Thames of course and the Kennet, but not that close, or you could fish the lakes at Eynsham but don't think they have introduced barbel as yet, but huge carp, plus tench rudd and chub.

Used to fish the Seacourt Stream a lot a few years back - for chub and roach - and it was always a quiet, lovely place. It's the North Ox club, I think, which was cheap as chips and could be joined at JK as above. Not sure if it is much good these days, but someone here will know.

shabbington on the thame is also good for a bit of stick flost fishing, but it's season only, either barnet or tring clubs.

Give Graham State of State's Tackle a call on 01993 702 587. He will be able to put you on a decent stretch.
I was based at Brize for 6 years on and off and will actually be landing there tomorrow as I return from theatre.
The Windrush was at one point full of barbel. You could expect to catch them in numbers on any stretch downstream of Witney. Unfortunately, they have been utterly decimated. I first fished it in 2004 and had a good season. 2005/6 was a little slower, but 2006/7 it just fell off a cliff.
There are still good sized chub to be had, and I've heard that the silver fishing has recovered somewhat. In it's prime, the Windrush was renowned for producing specimen roach and near record sized Dace.
Drop me a PM if you like. I don't live all that far away and could maybe show you my old haunts if you fancy? I'm on leave for pretty much all of July and it'd be nice to have a look.
Even without the barbel, the river is still an absolute picture.

Hi Andrew,
The club ticket you need is Witney AC they have fishing below Newbridge and night fishing is permited and you can park your car next to the river.
PB from this stretch is 11lb 11oz. You also have a very good chance of a really big carp and i do mean big. Only downside are the crays. The tackle shop you need to talk to is Turners of Faringdon as some of the upper raches can produce a lump or two but it will not be easy. Ps the gravel pits aroud that area do produce barbel as the windrush floods into them. I have seen barbel taking baits of the top in stone acres (linch hill)

Thank god someone is able to verify my statement that the Windrush at least WAS a prime barbel river....I was beginning to wonder if I had imagined it :D

Kevin, do you know if that last section of the Windrush, at the confluence with the Thames (Rose Revived fishery, if I recall correctly) is now a private syndicate? I have fond memories of fishing for chub and barbel (and stonking great roach), in that section of both rivers. Mind you, it was MANY years ago

Cheers, Dave.
