Day ticket/free to fish rivers?

Hi

I am new here but not technically my first post as I had some items for sale.

I intend to get back into fishing in the new season after some 30 year lay off, I used to fish a lot for carp and my biggest back then was 21lb. I appreciate times have changed and tackle has gone all hi tech, I am also amused to read the topic of baits is still such secret squirrel :D

I would probably stick to day ticket waters and fisheries as I would prefer to give River fishing for Barbel, Chub, Perch & Pike my preference but living in Waterlooville my nearest River is probably the Dorset Stour (Throop fishery) so some traveling involved.

I fished Throop once many years ago on Day ticket and was lucky enough to bag a Barbel on 'Spam'. I understand day tickets are still available through Davis Tackle but can you walk the Throop section or do you have to have a ticket? I ask as I would like to see what the place is like before bringing the tackle.

I also understand that there is a 'free' section of the Dorset Stour that can be fished? Is this worth the effort to fish this section? Does it have reasonable fish stock?

Finally there is the River Test at 'Broadlands' but I can find very info on whats in it apart from the Trout and apparently some salmon.

Lots of questions I know but we all have to start somewhere so any advice on where I can fish reasonably locally on day ticket or free etc I would appreciate it
Cheers

Unless it has changed since I used to fish the Stour, the Mussclife stretch is free. Runs from Northbourne, site of the old donkey sanctaury down to the Throop. Longham is also free, from the road bridge down to the weir, oposite bank from the pub. The pub bank was free from the style to the weir. Loads of fish, Barbel, Chub, Roach, and Pike.
Someone local should have more up to date info

Free fishing in the Bournemouth area can be had on the Stour at Longham (downstream of the Waterworks, behind the Bridge House Hotel).

Muscliffe (above beat 1 on Throop).

River Frome at Wareham Quay

With regards to walking the banks at Throop, there are areas where the public can walk but if you find yourself coming across a locked gate with an RDAA sign on it, then you'd need a club book and key to access these areas.

Beat 2 and 3 has the most public access areas and you'll always find a bailiff on hand somewhere along the beats to be able to offer you some help an advice if you decide to purchase a day ticket.

Day tickets for Throop are available at all the local tackle shops, Davis Tackle, Ringwood Tackle, Christchurch Angling Centre etc.

Being in Waterlooville, I'd also suggest you might want to think about the Kennet, Itchen, Blackwater, Wey, Whitewater, Arun, Loddon and Rother rivers too as they are all a comparable distance to the Stour (or shorter)

All the best,

Paul

Thanks for the informations guys, thats something to be going on with.

Has nobody any information on the river (stream) Test?

Don't know much about the Test, but here's a link to a dat ticket stretch:

http://www.timsburyfishing.co.uk/, coarse tickets are £20/day and have to be booked in advance. I think it's mainly Roach, Dace, Pike, Test Valley AC also have some fishing on both the Test and Itchen.

There's a day ticket stretch of the Itchen at Mansbridge, http://www.itchen-fishing.co.uk/CoarseFishing.asp, £23/day or immediately downstream is a free stretch that has produced Barbel to 12lb+, http://www.tvac.helisite.co.uk/waters/Itchen/top_large.jpg, the bank nearest the road is free fishing and carries on below the road bridge on the left-hand side.

Hope this helps

The Test at Broadlands offers season tickets for coarse, trout and salmon fishing. The game fishing is probably available, the coarse is not, waiting list longer than a phone book!
what about the Avon, closer than the Stour, some dayticket water, but the best bet would be to join Christchurch A.C. miles of river, lakes too, get to Ringwood and turn either way!

Thanks Peter.

I take it Christchurch AC membership is not postcode bound then?

NO ,open to all, not a cheap ticket, but given your location, may be well worth a look, check out their website. If you fancy a go at salmon, the Somerley ticket is good value, somewhat like rocking horse droppings, but worth the effort!
