Day Shelter / Umbrella with more protection

Steve Hayward

Senior Member
I'm looking for an umbrella/shelter it has to fit a few critera though

1) As light as possible
2) Can be put up in tight swims
3) some protection from behind - flat back/ wings whatever

I've been down the day shelter route and there are some great ones but I only have my chair and tackle bag to worry about and you need space to put them up - so kind of counted them out but if someone can find one otherwise.

I've looked at the ovals etc. as they can be put up in small spaces but again often quite big as there is always space for a bedchair under them.

Flatback brollies look more the thing but most have pole shipping slips - to me this says " place to rain to come in" and most are not clear on how the pole fit's just tilt or nubrolli style or both

Saw something on ebay last week - a FOX shelter - looked ideal except that the door etc was still attached (don't really want these) would had it but went for more than I had £60+ from memory.

The guy did not know what it was called. It had a great system to put up - brolly pole, the umbrella was put together in a hub this hub on the end of a pole which had a curve at the top this then slid on a brolly pole (centre pole sorted!). It had pegging at back & options for storm poles etc.

Any ideas gents. Or if someone can tell me which Fox system it was

Thanks in advance

Steve,
could the Fox brolly/shelter you saw have had an optional wrap fitted?
If so could it have been one of these?

I've been using a Chub Snooper shelter (not the lite which I should have got) for the last couple of seasons. It has served me well but I'm thinking of replacing it with one of these. Light, compact, flexible enough to get into tighter spots with as much protection as you are going to get without a front. Shame it's so damned expensive though.

Chris

I've looked at the FX as an option. The one I saw had the sides and door sewn in.

I used to have an original Airframe AI - class kit - god know why I sold it.... I really regret it.

I've had the Wychwood solace as well - also good for the money

Was trying to go back towards a centre pole as some of the swims I use are not flat or TBH a real swim when talking about my local club lake

Just looked at the snooper - seems there are two types one with a dquarish frame and one using tension style poles.

Thanks

Chris

this was the ebay items number - closed this weekend - thought it was last - I need to go fishing.

One of the pictures shows the umbrella locking and it slid straight on a standard brolly pole.

Sorry, Steve,
I've no access to ebay so I can't even have a gander.

How about the chub brolly?....I know you were not sure about the brolleys but looks the part and is fairly light.

I was given a chub cyfish lite bivvy for my birthday, this is only 3.6 kg without the groundsheet and can be a day shelter and a bivvy.....not sure when I am going to use it, but it is very well made and thought out etc

or the JRC

or the Nash peg one and oval plus

Thanks for the links

Wonder who owns the rights to the "Brotel" and how could we persuade them to start making em again. Maybe we could get the carp boys to use em as a "stalking, guest, smokin shelter" it would sell by the shed load... just repaired mine and re proofed it.
Years old but still functions, tight swims no problem and very light under 2kg

Steve, quite a bit more expensive than £60 quid I'm affraid but might be worth taking a look at this Wychwood shelter...It ticks a lot of your boxes and comes in either 50 or 60 inch and if it fits the bill you can always start dropping hints about your forthcoming birthday or early Christmas prezzie !!!! The 50" is a bit cheaper...

edit....sorry Steve, just read thru' the other contributions and note that you have already mentioned this one !!!!!

Another vote for the Korum Stormshield, had no problems with it even through some howling wind and rain, and as for weight have had no trouble carrying it in my rodbag

Also got a Wychwood short session shelter, don't think they make them anymore, as with the Korum no problems with it but much heavier and larger more suited to, erm, not so short sessions :)

Using the same criteria I use the Korum 50" brolly with added 'storm caps' which allows me to remove the centre pole and use storm poles giving me plenty of room and full protection, and at £45 good value as well!

I'd agree never got a Brotel, had a look when first came out but had a Nash oval which was a joke for a chair only
wish I had got the Brotel

Thanks for all the links gents. Managed to get a Grey's Groundhugger delivered for under £40. The pole detaches allowing the use of storm poles only so should serve purpose fine.

If anyone see's a Brotel for sale I could be interested.

Pretty sure it was marketed by Relum.
