Daiwa regal 3500

Senior Member
Am in the market for a new pair of small/medium sized baitrunners for tench and small to medium river barbel bashing. Has anybody used these, if so what is the build quality and how smoooooooooth is the clutch? what is the differance between the 'X' and the 'Z' other than price?
Also looking at the shimano 4000 dl fa or the cheap option of the okuma interceptor pro.
Have finally tired of the sticky rear drag shimano gte c reels i have been using for the past couple of seasons (if they made them in front drag they would be awesome!)
Any opinions of any of the above reels welcome. Would appreciate it if this didn't turn into a shimano vs rest of world debate though guys!!

Chuck the Shimano XT FA onto your shortlist. Not exactly in keeping finances tight territory but it's a nice bit of kit.

the x is a cheaper version with less bearings (3 not 6) and plastic spools (alloy with the Z), nice reels but i went for the shimano 4000DL, just felt better;) got the 2500DL's for lighter work too and the only fault i found with them is they only have a graphite spare spool but as i only paid £110 for the pair of 4000's and £100 for the pair of 2500's i still think there cracking value:)

George, I had the old Regal X's some years back, when I re-tackled up after a few years away from the water. In my opinion I would avoid them mate. Not a patch on Shimanos or even Okumas, if you want to save a few quid. To me they felt completely unbalanced, the line lay was pony, and the reels felt about as smooth as a buzzard's crotch. Just my opinion mate.

I have one which has seen years of abuse and has never let me down. I have had some big kippers in tight swims and the clutch has been fine. Much cheaper than a shimano I bought which has long since ended up as landfill.

Hi George, i have them in the silver 4000 size and are bang on. The model i have is the regal plus. Great winding power, smooth trademark clutch, and excellent price!

I've had regal x and zs they are good usable reels but the drags lead much to be desired had to take a z back 3 times each time was a replacement reel 4 th time i left with shimanos and gave the remaining reels to my brother he is useless at fishing anyway.:D

I've heard good reports but people seem to sell them off allot early days with them i think i had a shimano Fa nice reel but proffered my gte 6000.

right so sounds like the dl fa's might be in order then, has anyone any experience with korum kxi reels?

A mate has a pair. He seems to like them but in hindsight would probably admit that he'd have had Shimanos if he'd had a few extra quid in his pocket at the time.

Just one more point,

The after sales service with Shimano is second to none.
I send my reels back to Felindre servicing every couple of seasons, they generally charge £10-15 per reel and i'm using baitrunners bought in the early nineties!

Still as smooth as a babies bum.
Another thing before I go........... Anyone got any idea how smooth a buzzards crotch is and if so, how did you come by this information?

Regards,
Jeff

In view of a certain news items of late, I would have thought that bringing someone elses knowledge of a buzzards crotch into question, whilst at the same time admitting to knowing how smooth a babies bum is...was a very dangerous road to go down.....

Cheers, Dave :D

You have a point there Dave...........however.................................It is surely common knowledge that a babies bum, generally speaking, is somewhat smooth. A buzzards crotch on the other hand is something of a speciallist subject i would have thought?
Or I could have been missing out for years!..................(or not)!!!

Regards,
Jeff

Well I'm more of a pornithologist than an ornithologist, both pastimes involve looking at birds but with a slight difference. However, have none of you gentlemen heard the phrase "rougher than a buzzard's crotch"? Perhaps it's a coloquialism from my neck of the woods. Next time you see a picture of a buzzard though, take a look at its leg. You would not want to have it dragged across your face, or anywhere else for that matter.

Given the chance i shall grasp it with both hands.

Jeff

Quite. Always had a lot of time for birds mesself. Not too particular about their widely varying parts. "Basically", anywhere will do, smooth or Ruff.

Yes indeed, Paul. That's one thing that I have learnt in this life: you have to take the muff with the groove.

Subject: The Ruffe and The Smooth

Absolutely, young Haydn. One can but Try and Do One's Very Best with the many Me-Toos and Also Rans.

But as for the Real McCoy...
