CLO (Sluis Equivalent)

Jon Whelan

Senior Member
I have searched the definition of this bait to no avail. As far as I can gather its a high quality bird food that hardens, binds and adds to both the texture and attraction qualities of any type of mix. A couple of questions if I may?

1. What does 'CLO' & 'Sluis Equivalent' mean?
2. What is it made from (might be answered in q.1)?
2. Does CLO harden baits upon addition of liquids/leaving to soak & or only upon boiling?
3. Has anyone used this to help bind a ground base mix?

Price varies but is around 25kg for £38.99, which is equal to the pellets I used. For my ground base mix I am looking for binders of particles - I have just been using scalded pellet/paste, but want to use a broader variety at the same cost as pellets or preferentially less.

Thanks again,

Jon

I have used Sluis CLO and Myner many years ago in birdfood boilie base mixes. It was basically a mixture of small seeds plus conditioners for the birds it is meant to feed. To be honest i can't see it being much good as a binder.

Would have thought your best bet would be Vitalin, surprising how much particle you can load into it and it will still ball-up and catapult without falling apart. Cheaper than pellet as well.

CC moore sell CSL method mix. I've used that 50/50 with scaldies. Nice and cheap.

It's pretty much ground up ewe nuts and some binding agent.

CLO will bind nicely.

Agree with Gary, Vitalin is as good as it gets for a bulk particle carrier

Thanks Gary for your info - not come across Myner before. I will have a search, but is this just another name for Sluis CLO or a variant of?

Just talked to CC Moores re this. They had similar thoughts on the binder quality - would thicken a mix not necessarily be a pure binder. I will experiment tho with this. I will be using vitalin, but my preliminary thoughts is at about 10% - kinda interested to see any responses on the other thread if vitalin has much pulling power in itself. In addition for binding will be pellet paste & a couple of other powders.

I am just looking for another cheap binder with a different 'pulling' profile.

Interesting tho - CLO stands for 'Cod Liver Oil', I read this in another forum but was not entirely convinced. But CC Moores confirmed this. They were a little vague on the 'sluis' tho but its possibly the mesh grade/particle size or mix consistency.

Cheers, Jon

Thanks Darren - interesting to read that is pretty much ewe nuts with a binding agent. I have used ewe nuts for carp fishing & wondered whether many here have used these for barbel fishing - great binding characteristics & very cheap. I added this comment to the vitalin thread last night.

CC Moores described Sluis CLO as a Cod Liver Oil meal with the addition of ground seeds - the phone call was a little rushed & I tried to get more info without stretching the conversation out too much.

Cheers, Jon

In the dim and distant past when using vitalin as the bulk carrier for my maize assalt when chasing some river Severn carp we certainly caught plenty of pesky pest Barbel. Vitalin is by far the best and easiet way of getting particles down to the river bed quickly and as has been stated it will hold a large amount of particle before falling apart.

Think you will find that Sluis is a brand name as there are or used to be other Sluis bird food products such as Sluis Mynah Bird Food.
The CLO does indeed stand for Cod Liver Oil.
It's a finely ground mixture of seeds and contains other bird conditioners eg clo.
It's a great binder as well as a source of nutrition and is used (in equivalent form) in a great number of baits/boilies.
Nutrabaits still do 'real' Sluis CLO.
Think that Vitalin may be better for your purpose.
Cheers

Thanks Jeremy for outlining your use of vitalin. Also, thanks to Bob for your input & on what 'Sluis' means - much happier with that explanation.

Bob has pretty much nailed it. Sluis is a Dutch company specialising in bird feeds and at one time they were market leaders in the field. CLO was one of their earliest concoctions, aimed mainly at bird breeders. As mentioned the Mynah food is interesting, as is their "Universal". They also do a canary colourfood that's a passable (albeit more expensive) substitute for Robin Red - in fact one of my chums used it in his bream groundbait:eek:

I'm not certain if anyone is currently importing Sluis products but as Bob mentioned some bait suppliers do get the CLO in bulk.

Sluis alternatives would refer mainly to other manufacturers "eggfoods". Examples that come immediately to mind are "Quicko" and "Bogeda", there are others but they tend to drift in and out of the market. A visit to a good pet shop, especially if they specialise in birds might be helpful.

The Chairman on Thursday

On the blower with young Paul just now. Odd conversation. He going all Mystic Meg and Twin Peaks ("yes please" to the latter) on me.

"It is happening again, Bertram."

"Pray what, dear boy...?"

"Bait overkill. We overdid hemp and maggots and casters and pellets and pellets and pellets and pellets [he carried on a bit more about pellets, I even tried to stop him], now we're buying the Complete Pet Shop with a view to dumping it in the river as if it was some ruddy carp lake and catching some soon-to-wise-up-once-again barbel."

"The way forward, then, dear boy...?"

"Not telling. Not on a phoneline. I'll see you at the Castle."

Capital!

As ever,

B.B.

Steve, many thanks for your detailed explanation.

Chairman BB - one advised me to go to the seed shop (as per the partiblend thread) & upon gracing the steps I was impressed with the variety I found. The only problem was that I now need a shire horse to get this mountain of bait to the river... & then would you be gracious to assist loading the bait so making an island for my castle. Good thing this island - look its got its own moat!

Keep the posts coming BB.

As ever, Jon

Thanks @Bob Gill they look good, that top site has a few interesting ingredients on there.

To be honest, I'd heard from somewhere that Haiths is overpriced so good to hear that it's rated.

@Jon Young years ago we bought a milling machine (when we were selling our ellips pellets we wanted to offer a bulk ground version). I've just been and bought some budgie feed to put through it....

When I was looking at the links bob posted I thought it just looked like ground pigeon conditioner. Hope it works for you
