Chub Rod

Hi

Been thinking about a specialist Chub rod and have come across a rod that seems ideal but alas they no longer make it seems, the Shimano Technium Specialist. Can anyone recommend a similar rod?

Cheers

Matt

Don't have a great deal of knowledge about many rods but I chose a Drennan Specialist Avon quiver 1.25 for my chubbing and it is perfect . I just use it with the avon tip and touch ledger but it is still soft enough to show bites. And on tough days the quivers are very useful too. A great rod, as I have come to expect from Drennan and not even that expensive.

I have two rods which I use at the moment for my chub fishing the Grauvell which is a great value rod, bents through to the cork. I use it in its quiver format and it comes with three tips, light, medium and heavy [3/4, 11/2, 3 oz] the last one being carbon. I have never used the avon top but it does not inspire. At £60 I am happy to use it in jungle swim and if it was broken I would not be too upset, I would repalce it. The other is the Harrison Avon 1lb 6ozTC which is my rod of choice in the summer when I touch leger most of the time. It will handle barbel as well as chub which is why I use it in the summer when on the rivers I fish there is a good chance of a barbel.

Thanks for your replies guys. If it helps I fish the Stour so may encounter v large chub (if i'm lucky) and the odd double figure barbel so the rod needs to be sensitive enough on one hand but have the back bone to handle large fish on the other. I like the look of the Fox rod to be honest and so am favouring that at the moment.

I have just come across the Shimano Purist Barbel Multi Classic which looks pretty good. It has a 1.5lb TC and 1 Avon top (1.50lb) / 3 x Quiver tips (2oz, 3oz, 5oz) + carrier section. It intrigues me as it has a 1ft extension so you can use it as a 11ft or 12ft rod and has a non-reflective finish to cut glare. Does any one have any experiencec of this rod? What do you think? I found it at http://www.harrissportsmail.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=17569

Hi Matt,
go and see Nigel at Davis Tackle and have a look at the Harrison Avon Chimera, it's 11foot long and it's a delight to use and very light i have taken Barbel over 12lb on it, and it's a pleasure to use, it has not got a quiver tip, but i dont think that you would need it for the Throop Chub if you are touch legering.
I have just been given a brand new TFG 1.2oz barbel rod, i have yet to use it so only time will tell on that one, mind you, they are very expensive, but you can see them cheaper on e-bay, by Fishtec.
All the rods that the lads have mentioned are good rods, but for quiver tip rods, i must say that i do like the Shimano range.
By the way, i have seen some very large Chub on my Bailiffing rounds on Throop, i will tell them to hang on for you.
Brian.

Hexagraphs

I know they are rather expensive, indeed they cost more than twice as much as when I bought mine, but these rods are fantastic

I use the 1 lb test curve rod for chub and barbel and it copes brilliantly and pleasurably. Barbel to 12 3/4 lbs and river carp to 12lbs.

You might be able to find one on e-bay. You will not be sorry. They are a brilliant alternative to cane.

Ian Tucker does an excellent job using the same blanks,
