Hi all,
Anyone used soaked chick peas for chub, Barbel.
I used them when fishing the Ebro for Barbel ,always worked, but for some reason I have not used them on the Trent ?šŸ¤”
Think I will give it ago this coming season as well as the prawns and muscles šŸ˜‹

I had a brace of 3 barbel on the nene early in last season all on a cocktail of chick pea and maize from my particle mix.

Theyā€™ll eat anything if you can find em.

For the amount that you would use in a session for chub or barbel it isn't worth the time preparing them IMO. I use tinned chick peas along with tinned sweetcorn and lentils all strained and then mixed together. Save a few large grains of sweetcorn and some chick peas as hookbaits and then lightly mash the rest with a fork. The tinned peas are slightly soft so use a sweetcorn grain as a cushion between the pea and bait stop.

If you do go down the road of soaking chick peas also consider using white beans, the type that end up as baked beans. Tinned ones are far too soft to use on the hook with any confidence, but par boiled ones are fine. Also, Lidl sometimes have jars of lupins. They are also good hook baits for carp.

Tinned chickpeas are fine to freeze. The dried ones are fine too, just need a 24 hour soak beforehand. No boiling required. If memory serves, you can buy a 220g tin in big supermarkets.

I haven't got room in my bait freezer for pulses and grains other than hemp seeds. So I rely on tinned products that I can take off the shelf, strain and mix to suit. I cook ground maize for 20 minutes then add the tinned stuff. A bit of smoked paprika and it is ready.

You can get chick peas in 100g cans right through to 2kg catering tins.
