Centre pins

John Smith 2

Senior Member
Getting ready for the approaching season and hoping to fish the float more. Any recommendations for centre pins, one for roach and another for barbel( unless there's one that will cover both)
Regards

This quesion will stimulate a lot of replies some people recommending older second hand reels like aerials or some of the new very expensive copies of it but the usual conclusion is that the best reasonably priced new reel, easily available is the Okuma Sheffield or Aventis pro.
Either of these is suitable for Roach or Barbel, personally I have both and the Sheffield lives on my float rod and the Aventis on my ledger rod.
If I had to choose one it would be the Sheffield but I wouldn't be upset to be restricted to the Aventa.

Truepin trotter is a great pin for the money. Other then that a good running speedia wide drum very good barbel reel.

Hi John

Fred Crouch centrepins are good (I have 8 or so of them)

see here

See also (if you like a long read ;)) my article - link in my signature :)

A fellow Trent angler has recommended the Allcock aerial match for roach and the Heritage for barbel, any thoughts?
Also, I have an old Grice and Young Avon Royal Supreme that's been in my garage for years. Will that be any good( line guard broken)?
Regards

If you are on the look out I have a friend who's selling his extensive collection let me know by p.m.

I have the Okuma Aventa Pro and one of the Marco Cortesi (who is he anyway?!) pins. I really do like the Okuma, it's well made, gives off a nice feeling of quality and spins wonderfully although I primarily use it for lead work.
The Cortesi pin is very nice for the money, I have it on my trotting rod and is very good value. However it - quite unsurprisingly - doesn't feel like it will last. It would be fine for Roach and small Chub though but I wouldn't expect it to last catching multiple Barbel every day, not that there's any chance of that ever happening where I fish!

As a consequence I read the Grice and Young article on here, looked on fleabay and won an Avon Royal Supreme for 22 nuggets which I can't wait to try out in the new season!
If I ever come in to some money I'd be after a Fred Crouch pin as soon as I leave the bank, it just looks beautiful.
