carp

Mark Thompson

Senior Member & Supporter
I have two mirror carp in my garden pond.
One is about 12 lb fat and deep bodied and other is 9lb ish but slim.
Both same age and from same source.
Slim has got massive pecs but fatty hasnt.
Does this mean slim is a male and fatty a girl ?

Never seen them spawn in about 10 years yet all the other species in the pond have a good go.

Can anyone confirm the above.

Cheers

Reading that Males are slimmer than females but this is not a 100 per cent sure thing.

Mark,..you are probably correct with your assumption.
I have a pair of 25 year old ghosties in a pond that fit your discription.
They have bred once, and the female is rotund with small pecs. and weighs around the 18lb mark,..the male is torpedo shape, slightly longer and has large pecs. and weighs about 9 or 10 pounds.
I don't think the pectoral fins are relevent, but body shape is normally the giveaway,..and who chases who in the spring !!
The female is in the forground and the male can just about be seen swimming back down the pond.
The yellow ogun is also a female of 3 years old.

And instead of sleeping in a barn, so we could get up at sparrows and blank next day,I could have shown you mine G.
But its not as big as Daves :(
Tis nice pond, what sort of filter system do you have Dave?

I have never seen my carp "chase" around at spawning time.
There are only just the two so maybe they dont need to charge around, but slowly follow.
Or
Maybe they are gay ?

My goldfish develop small growths at base of pecs this time of year and the following pursuit of a female is absolutley relentless.
So carp dont have any visible physical change prior to spawning I assume ?

Hi Mark. I think you did offer. I just snored louder!!!

I reckon you need to get a bit of competition in your Pond.

I reckon your male carp feels like its been married too many years and fancies a change .....

Might be useful so I dont make the same mistake a mate did in Thailand.

Mark,..here,s part of the filter,..there is a one meter dia. vortex on the near end of the filter which would'nt fit into the pic.

Wow thats a lot of gear !!:)

I have a gravel bed with a matrix of pipes underneath that suck water in ,which go to the pump and back out into the pond at the surface.(so pump is actually sucking) Thats it !
Had it 12 years or so ,replaced pump once and water clarity is virtually as good as yours Dave,,apart from odd algae bloom in summer which takes a day or two to clear.

If it ain't broke don't fix it Mark,...you must have a good balanced setup.
Gravel can house an amazing amount of nitrifying bacteria.
The koi pond is 4500gallons;..not being satisfied with that I dug a 13000 gallon pond as well and stocked it with Tench and Golden Rudd [ few pics on my profile albums ],...the wife refers to our place as 'Taylor's world of water' nowadays!

Sounds fantastic and that's a great photo. Was dreaming last night of digging up the garden and doing something similar - pipe dreams! Good on you Dave.
Cheers Nick
