Canon G6 replacement

Sorry to inflict another camera thread on you - but I couldnt find the recent threads in Search / FAQ or Archive.

My Canon G6 appears to have died and their repair centre shutdown - so I am in need of a replacement. I'm not looking for the 'bells and whistles' features since I never use them - just the flip-screen and a remote. If the replacement could be smaller and cheaper then even better!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Regards

I have canon SX210IS. Doesn't have flip around screen or remote, but has excellent features for self takes. You can use the smart shutter function to release shutter when you smile or wink, and has a programable timer.

Takes a good picture and is nice and compact.

Would recommend it if you can live without flipround screen (remote is redundant)

Paul,
I looked for a camera with the flip around screen and couldn't find anything cheaper (new) than the latest versions (G11/12) of the G6 you have.

The G12 has gone up in price since I was looking just after Christmas.

The alternative flip screen camera was the Samsung EX-1. It was a broadly similar price to the G12 but appears to have dropped since. The assumption I'd make is that it's not selling or just isn't as good as the G12.

Paul,

Canon Powershot series if they are still around, flip screen, self timer options and compact with high resolutions.

Yep there still around, I have this one

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-A650-Digital-Camera/dp/B000V9D6GA

no remote but that has never been a problem as it has a programable timer

As far as I can tell that's not a current model though. Only the Powershot G12 and SX30IS in the current range appear to have the flip out screens. I wish they did one of the less flash and less expensive cameras with one.:(
Second hand or new old stock seems to be the only way to go if you want a flip screen Canon under around £400.

They might be an discontinued now Chris but still available some places, you can pick them up for about £120 second hand also.

If I was replacing my Canon S5 I'd be looking at a used Canon A650. Still has the programmable multi-shot timer and the flip out screen, but more compact and a lot lighter than the S5.

Re Samsung EX1, I have one and cant fault it. The flip screen is excellent and I bought a remote off ebay for £8.

I have the Canon Powershot A620, had ait a few years now, great compact digi camera had some very nice self portraits day and night shots and landscapes.

Its that good that I've started carrying it in my fishing bag again instead of my Nikon D3000 due to the size and weight, and ease of use when doing self portraits.

Any second hand Canon compact will suit the barbel anglers needs IMO

I have just bought a samsung st700. Very compact and I only paid about 150 for it. It has a secondary screen on the front, and whilst the timer is fixed to a max of 10 seconds, it does take a picture in response to a smile! The only downside to this is that you are required to ok each picture from the camera itself, so you can't effectively take multiple shots in one sitting. I have been trying to find a workaround this but no joy as yet.

Thanks for the update chaps.

I had rather hoped that technological advances might have created a smaller, cheaper version whilst keeping the flip screen...this fire by smile mechanism sounds great - not sure how it would work with me 'cos if I am actually photographing a fish I generally can't stop smiling!

Current options are to pay £130 to get the G6 fixed or maybe look at an iPhone 4 with that funny plastic spider holder that someone mentioned a few weeks ago...

Regards

Paul.

iPhone camera isn't great compared to a camera's camera. Certainly wouldn't be as good quality as your G6.

But then a camera camera doesn't send texts, go on the internet, or have a stupid recurring alarm that doesn't understand summertime...

I recently got hold of a very cheap Canon A640 to replace my ageing and bulky Canon G2. Keep checking ebay and you will eventually find a bargain, mine was cheap because the seller had spelt Canon with a double n.
