Broken Rod Tip

I've somehow managed to snap 2 inches off the top of one of my rods and was wondering how easy it is to fix?

I know i'll need a new tip ring and that the action of the rod will have changed (stiffer) but it's a nice rod and i don't want to give up on it just yet.

Do i just need to buy the correct glue and glue the new tip ring on or is there more to it than first meets the eye?

Cheers

Trevor

If you still have the broken section it should be possible to get the old tip ring off. Usually they're put on with a hot-melt adhesive so warming it (hot hair-dryer or electric paint-stripper) will allow you to get it off. If the taper of the tip allows you may be able to simply refit it without needing to buy one with a larger bore.

You can break the glue bond (whether hot melt or epoxy) with a match or lighter - just be carefull not to overheat.
You may need a ring with a larger tube diameter than the one you have taken off as the rod tapers - but you just might get away with the old one.
Use 5 minute epoxy to glue the new ring on - make sure you align it to the other guides.
Hope this helps,

So it is as easy as i hoped/ thought!

Thanks for the replies

Edit: Just one more question. The second to last eye is now a lot closer to the tip of the rod than before, what effect will this have on the action of the rod and should i consider repositioning it further back on the blank?

Trevor since you have the oppurtunity why not iso blob the rod? If you do a search in Archive you'll find a method for it. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Trevor,

I wouldnt worry too much about the ring being closer, unless the tip is extremely bendy it shouldnt effect the action too much and as long as the line is not touching the blank I'd say it will be fine....

If you do need a new tip ring, I can vouch for these fellas for good service http://www.hopkinsholloway.co.uk/categories.php?SID=1

PS - Bob, do you find 5 minute epoxy is just as good as the slower drying stuff on graphite? I only ask because I've had problems with it on bamboo!

Adam,
Usually use the longer drying epoxy for more structural jobs - only use 5 minute for tip rings in preference to hot melt.

I inadvertently took 6 inches off of the end of my old Giant - Martin Bowler Ouse Barbel rod last season, actually think it improved the rod. Now a useful 11 odd footer!

Weird that Mike as it's a Giant - Martin Bowler that i've broken too! Never been able to find a second, wish i'd of bought 2 when i bought my first for £50.

snapped the tip on one of my mavers at the tail end of last season and as others have said I trimmed the blank and got myself a bigger bore end eye and glued it on using normal epoxy and to be truthful if actually handles better now missing 6" off it than it did before.
Its easy to do just take your time and make sure your cutting blades are sharp.
