Bread

In your opinion would you rather use punch ,flake,or crust? and would you vary with the conditions and species being fished for.

I would normally always prefer flake, the only time I would consider using crust would be to try and 'induce' a take from a chub holding to a snag and want to waft a bouyant bait in its face, up of the bottom.

Roach from a canal - Punch
Chub from the river - flake
Carp off the top - crust
Loose feed - liquidise or mash
Base mix - bread paste

Bread is cheap, clean, easily available, easy to use, and versatile, and it works. I can't think of many species that wont take it. It is important that you choose the right type and brand of bread for your chosen method.

Free-lined floating crust amongst the summer lilly pads. The very essence of simple, Crabtree like fishing. For pure enjoyment and excitement, unbeatable, I reckon.

I'm not a big fan of bread as a bait. Not because it's ineffective, purely because it's a pain to use. The most likely way for me to use it on the hook is as floating crust.

Of course. Not point in using a bait or style inappropriately.

Chris I think bread a great bait . Great for chub ,Tench any thing thats swims I know a few lads has some good barbel out on bread .

I agree entirely, just don't like the "is it still on, is it not?" question that goes on in my head after a minute. At least with a floating crust I'll know. I don't doubt its effectiveness just I have little faith in it still being there to be effective.;)

I know what you saying Chris but done right bread stops on .Bread flake and crust inch off the bottom great chub bait

The great thing with bread is that if you put it in the right place it doesn't have to stay on long before a chub snaffles it! Flake stays on longer usually, but a good chunk of crust popped up off the bottom seems to get them going.
