Braid on a pin for trotting

Do any of you barbel trotting specialists use braid on a pin for trotting? I have some 10lb BS power pro that I am going to try, perhaps there is something better? I like braid and use it for all my other barbel fishing. The 10lb BS power pro has a very low diameter. I will probably use a fluorocarbon hooklength with a small swivel to remove the double maggot twisting.

Braid works very well when trotting Conrad. It floats (if you buy the right sort) and keeps you in direct contact with the float so there is little slack to pick up before the strike goes home.

Always use a mono hooklength, preferably with some stretch in it as there is no cushion effect with braid. Make sure that you use a rod with a little extra give or a very light clutch if using a fixed spool. On a pin, just educate your thumb,

The only draw back with braid is that it tends to bed-in especially after you have caught a fish or retrieved a tree branch  You may have to pay line off the spool for the next cast.

The power pro is ideal for the job.

Thanks Dave, I have a beefed up 13 foot waggler rod for now but it is nice and soft and I used it with 8lb braid and had carp up to 14lb on it before I discovered that I really hate carp puddles.

As for the bedding in, is it best to use any backing which tends to be softer than the braid? I don't anticipate using this pin for anything other than trotting so hopefully I will have minimal tree action.

Thanks for the advice.

If your centrepin spool has a solid drum face (like the okuma's) then you'll need too line it with mono ,put just enough on too too cover the face of the drum .As braid has a tendancy too slip on smooth surface's and the whole of your braid can spin around on drum face ,but mono doesn't .

the thing too remember with braid isn't the B/s ,its matching the diameters of the braid too hooklength .As different braid makers use different B/s ratings per dia ,decide what hooklength strength your most likley too need ,i've used fireline crystal sinse it came too the market ,in three sizes 8,14,20 lbs braid rating (8lbs fcb = 3lbs mono ,14lbs fcb = 6lbs mono ,20lbs fcb = 8lbs mono) these cover all my needs ,though most common used is the 14lbs B/s braid

i used Power pro before switching too fireline crystal.
(power pro braids : 15lbs=4lbs mono ,20lbs=6lbs mono ,30lbs=8lbs mono)

too thinner a braid isn't always better ,if theres a chance of barbel you have too consider the cheese wire effect thin braid can have if a barbel rolls on the line and goes beyound your mono ? plus slightly thicker lines float better .

oh and try too moderate your strike ,because of the directness of braid a less vigerous strike ,well more of a sustained pull /sweep is needed too set hooks .

Thanks very much Steven all good advice, thanks for reminding me of that article as well Paul. I knew I'd seen something somewhere. Looking forward to making a complete mess of things tomorrow!
