I haven't made my own baits for a few years now as very rarely fish a lead approach. I'm cetrainly no expert, but I used to be quite keen at one time, and have added the above ground down in a few different base mixes (both fishmeal and milk), with some good results. It can't be quantified as to whether this was the deciding factor for success, as there were a few other bit's and bob's in there too
What I can quantify though is that barbel really do like it! I mainly fish the float for them using soaked and boiled tk conditioner and hemp 50/50, and have many times watched fish feeding for hours confidently on this bait
I think the positives are that, by including it the fish are actually getting a good natural food source (that if used enough will recognize) and something to chew on instead of just flavored powdered balls
Not saying it will transform your barbel catches, but by including it, I think it can only be a positive thing
