am just getting back into fishing, after quite a lay off, and aiming at getting geared up for and targetting barbel mainly, over the last few months ive bumped into a couple of chaps who say they prefer to fish in the margins, with big cubes of meat,i mean like matchbox size, would be grateful of any tips on what rig to use, and wich sort of presentation would be best for this method. cheers tony

Matchbox size lumps of meat aren't big Tony, more like average down here on the Avon. :)

Think barbels mouths are very misleading Iv caught barbel on 21mm halibut pellet expecting it to be a huge fish and it turned out it was only 7lb.

For luncheon meat I use Rawlplugs on a hair rig. I tie the hook on leaving a 4 - 6" tail. This is slid through a short length of tube to keep it parallel to the hook shank down to the bend. The tail is then threaded through a plastic Rawlplug and wrapped back round it towards the open end. I secure the wrapping with a silicone float rubber. It can be removed or adjusted in seconds and secures the meat very well. I've had three bait robbin' chub, all around 3lb, on the same piece of Spam and still caught a barbel on it. :)

simple running rig with a 6/12 inch hooklink with a size 2 hook
pull it through the meat and some speggetti on the shank of the hook as a stop then chuck it in waite and hold on tight

do you mean to put the spagetti through the eye of the hook phil?

Tony, use a stringer needle to pull the hooklink through the meat and slide it down onto the hook and then place a piece of spaghetti between the bend of the hook and the meat to stop the meat from pulling through. I hope you can understand what I mean as its difficult to explain in words:)

Its a long time since I've put a picture on BFW so I hope this has worked. If so what you see is a plaster board fixinx and one thats been cut down. cut them down to roughly match the size of meat you want to use. That said the cut down one in the picture will hold really big lumps of meat. Attach it to a hair rig screw it in to the meat for a really solid hold.

Mark that is the same method I use, and I get more than a dozen casts from each piece. The only difference is I sustitue a short length of grass for the spaghetti.

yes tony as mark described is how i do it

if there is no weed coming down i cast out and it stays there till it goes

if you use tough meat and a size 2 or 1 hook you don't even need a stop. Just feed the hook through twist 180 degrees and push the point back into the meat, it will stay on the hook for dozens of casts.
