Best net for barbel

I know there seems to be a trend to use the oval or d shaped nets these days but I realy dont get on with them, I have a Korum and an Insight net in the Garage and they rarely come out unless there is a flood on, I much prefer a 36 inch triangular net with a 4 foot deep mesh so I can properly rest fish and also for the fact I can roll it up and carry it in my rod bag...........I hate carrying these spoon nets, I finish up getting them caught all over the place or tripping over them...........Is it just me??

No Ian,,,I am of exactly the same mind.

Look at Chris Brown Products landing nets.
Any body have any experience of them ??

Between two stools on this one, I have just replaced my 36'' triangular and it's brilliant as Ian states for resting barbel, but in a tight swim they can be a nightmare. So I guess the one that Simon has put up will be just the thing to add to my already net festooned garage that resembles a sushi bar:)

Thanks guys.....interesting comments.....i don't reckon I'd get in some of the swims I fish with a big landing net......I quite like the look of the Wychwood net....Ian any chance you wonna sell me your Korum net?....it must be the one I can't get hold of.

: )

Hi guys,

Please be aware that while the Abu-Garcia net IS a very convenient and ingenious net, it is NOT built to last. A mate of mine has had his for one season, and the wear on the thin plastic 'V' block has allowed the two arms to slowly move towards each other, such that they are now only a few inches apart, making it all but useless. You will also find that should you wish to change the mesh, for a deeper one for instance, it is NOT going to be an easy task, if possible at all.

I should add that this guy fishes a lot, and averages 40/50 barbel per season, quite a few of them being doubles....but still....

Cheers, Dave.

Sorry James, afraid not, it is my perfect Tench net as it is easily rinsed of slime due to it's plastic coated net :)

Julian, I also have a fox barbel net in my vast collection in the garage, my opinion is:

Arms are far too short creating a short but wide net, the opposite of what you actually want to draw barbel over the cord towards the spreader

Net is not deep enough to sufficiently rest Barbel unless you stand holding the net at water level, i.e. you cannot stake it to the bank inside the spreader as I often do with mine whilst preparing camera, etc...

Handle is all but useless, far too short for river fishing

Spreader block is absolutely brilliant and I have even bought another to use with me pike net.

My Net, which has evolved greatly over a few seasons is:

Three piece take apart Harrison Chimera handle, 10 feet long, custom built for me by Ian Tucker
Greys Prodigy 36 inch carbon arms
New style Greys Prodigy plastic spreader block
Greys prodigy net

The whole thing is very compact when took apart and the net wrapped around arms, handle, etc with a rod band and then carried on the velcro straps on the side of my Thinking Anglers Rod sling but yet extremely strong and stiff, no silly corners on the arms and the net is about 4 1/2 feet deep and very, very roomy.

Agree it's not built to last multiple seasons no. I buy a new one about every 18 months, which is fine by me as it's cheap.

Changing mesh is absolutely bonkers! Why on earth?

Ian Crooks net is great. If Mr Tucker could build the Abu Garcia one I have it'd be perfect for me however.

I really like my Korum Latex barbel spoon so much, I think I will buy the new incarnation rather soon.

Without a shadow of doubt its the latex, i love the best about this net....Its no not too deep so I can unhook the Barbel while its still in the water and most barbel never leave the water.

I got shot down for asking this question i am glad to see that you havent

I ended up buying the Latex Barbel spoon and its a great piece of kit i have yet to use it in very fast water but so far its great

Have found a triangular net handy to carry in my quiver as there is less chance of leaving it at home...:(:(:(.

Make sure you glue the screws in on your Korum latex spoon or it may work loose as a few have and drift away at a vital moment.

I had a chris brown barbel net and really didnt get on with it. Mesh not a great quality, pole to heavy and it's unwieldy... I cant fault the wynchwood net with a Fox stalker tele handle. I dont think i'll go back to a triangular net.

On the suibject of carrying it, I find it sits on the legs of my chair nicely.

having tested my CB, not so sure about it.

I would agree with this . I have one of these nets , they do look good but after a bit of use they do fold up on themselves usually at the critical moment . They do not in my opinion have the depth of net to rest a big fish properly . I bought mine for chub fishing it was good while it lasted basically

The one I have that has lasted some considerable abuse over 3 seasons is the JRC roamer . I have the 42 inch model which is slightly unweildy but I believe there is a 36 inch available . They have a very deep net , high quality construction and the the usual achilles heel on many nets the spreader block is still going strong
