Bargain reels

Daiwa TDR at a good price

Are they good reels for Barbel fishing?

I'm trying to find a reel that's not to bulky & similar in size to the Shimano Baitrunner x-aero 4000 fa.

Mainly using 1.75 to 2.25 rods with large feeders if that helps to answer my query? 😊👍

I believe these reels have the system of oiling whereby when the handle is cranked lubrication is actioned over all gearing and then relaxes when idle. I am sure our Rich will explain better.
The drag is exceptional too and would probably be ideal as a barbel workhorse reel
These reels are primarily for commercial carpers, not sure the extreme shallow spool is ideal for what we do though.

If you are not too adverse in not spending 150 quid on a reel, the Daiwa Ninja 4000 would be worth a look..Tackle Tavern Tarts 😏 are circa £54 great reels that are robust and good clutch. Line lay is superb.

I cant!
It’s the first I’m hearing about that Neil

I’ve got a TDR 3012 qd and it’s a very basic but very reliable little reel

The clutches are exceptional because they are bearing assisted like the TDX was.

I think they make extremely good trotting reels in the smaller sizes. Mines handled a lot of barbel on the float

I think it's called mag oil or similar and it is in their top of the range reels. Mag= magnetic so you see the principle of the system.

I'm with you there Neil.
Got a couple of these in different sizes, use them for my winter chubbing 👍

Ah ok.
Your referring to Daiwas mag seal.
It’s not a self lubricating system it’s a very clever sealing system using a magnetic oil between two magnetic surfaces to bridge the gap and completely seal the reel from water.

Sadly daiwa down graded the newest TDR and took the mag sealed tech away. 🤷🏻

The magseal tech is amazing. One of my Castizms spent about 8 hrs in the bottom of silty mere after my rod got dragged in after a very viscious take from a carp. After recovering the reel (down to the spool knot) the reel was pristine and hasn't skipped a beat since that was back in 2017. Amazing really...I expected it to seize up.

They are quite big reels with very shallow spools. Basically designed for long range Stillwater feeder fishing with braid.

I put 12lb mono on one spool and reckon there is enough capacity (100-120 m) for shortish range barbel fishing.

I bought one a month ago on the basis that they were too cheap to ignore ! I’ve already gone back to my 4000 fighting drag reel for legering with a 1.75 rod. I might use it for spod/marker work; or flog it.

Yes I quite agree it is brilliant
All 3 of my TDX reels have been well n truly dunked while deep wading and despite stripping them down after to Dry the things out they’ve been absolutely bone dry inside and the lubricants in tact.

There are a lot of mag seal haters out there for one reason or another but I’m a fan.

However….. I won’t get involved with it while servicing reels. If I have a mag seal go, it will have to be sent back to daiwa. I don’t know enough about them and don’t possess that expensive oil anyway
