barbel tubes/keep sacks

Whats the difference between this and a carp sack??

I cant find any examples online at all. If anyone has a link that would be great.

Cheers

Never heard of a barbel tube mate, i am guessing this is just a resting product for a barbel? I.E something else to carry around the river bank with you?

Call me sceptical but i'm not sure i like the sounds of these things! Whats wrong with the good ol fashioned deep landing net?

I assume what Lewis is referring to is the same as a Pike Tube and the intended use is to keep a Barbel caught in darkness until day break in order that a 'happy snap' can be taken! If so I would strongly discourage the practice!! Our chosen quarry requires constant good Oxygen levels and although they can tolerate water with a lower dissolved Oxygen level for short periods of time, I feel that keeping Barbel Tubed/Sacked overnight (even for just an hour or so) could potentially cause them serious distress.

Only my opinion:(

a barbel tunnel is around 2-3 ft in lengh and 8-10 square and metal framed with secure pegging points at both ends. once rested and recovered the barbel are kept in these prior to photographing at a later time.
normally caught in the night by the lone angler awaiting a mate to take pics the following morning and normally only used for special fish.
the fish have a lot more room to move about unlike a carp sack.
hope this helps.
i must add the use of these is now condoned by many people and dis-couraged by a lot of angling clubs.

Like the much abused keepnet but smaller?:confused:

I acquired one some years ago just for the sake of seeing what they were like.

It has not seen water.

It's effectivly a rectangular keepnet sealed at both ends, it has a "string" pegging point on each end running from 3 sides of the end frames , enabling a stretch to full length for keeping upright.
It has a full length zip in one of the long sides and measures 50cmx40cmx105cm.

Leyton, the only thing wrong with a keepnet is people using them incorrectly and the perception others have of them.

Nothing wrong with keepnets in my view, if as Colin states, they are used correctly.

I have chosen not to use one for any of my fishing, since I was a once a month pub club angler.
I no longer have a need to look at my catch at the end of a session

I've read your blog and seen you fishing Fred and can concur that you have little use for any retention system......Or even a landing net for that matter.:D

Lewis,

What you (and Fred) are describing is the Queensford Retention System, if you do a Google you will find loads of stuff including this link to an old thread.

The lesser of two evils I suppose.

I'd rather see a barbel in a keepnet/pike tube/QRS, than go belly up due to mishandling, insufficient recovery time, particularly in low oxygen levels.
