Barbel Society

Is the Barbel Society still worth joining. As far as I know there is no publication anymore. Do they still control any stretches of water.
I would happily join, but was wondering if it was a society in decline.
I would appreciate your opinions.
Thanks in advance

I have the Summer Edition 2024 of Barbel Fisher the Barbel Society's publication when I was still a member.
I don't keep up to date with them as it seems everything is now done on Facebook and I don't subscribe to that.
Mike

The waters are not included in the joining fee, you pay for those seasonally. My nearest, Pixham Ferry, on the Severn, costs more than my angling club membership. I'd somehow have to be convinced it was worth it.
.

Hi Glyn, they still do the 2 magazines a year and currently have 2 stretches of the Trent at Normanton and Sutton, and pixham Ferry on the Severn. Looking on the website both Trent sections have a waiting list.

I used to be a member a long time ago and wouldn’t joint again. I believe they are out of touch with many Barbel anglers and especially when they were pushing for Otter culls, which is a complete nonsense and one which will put angling at odds with the general public. The rant at the Angling Trust, of which I am a member also didn’t go down well:

BFW is the best home for Barbel fishing 😎

Hi Glyn,

Apologies for the delay in responding, only a couple of the committee post on this forum.

“The Society is very much alive, our latest magazine is with the printers ready for distribution early in the new year.
We have a strong financial base and a loyal core membership, many have been with us since we began, thirty years ago.
Our fisheries are detailed on our current website but we are working on a brand new website which will be live in 2025.

Our last annual show held in Nottingham was successful, clips from it can be found on You Tube.

We are always looking at ways to evolve and we are confident that we are well equipped and can play a part in an ever changing barbel environment.

If you would like any more information then please get in touch, Steve is always available at stevepope@btinternet.com

Hope you decide to join.

Have a Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year .

On behalf of the Committee.
