Basically your average barbel rig is a carp rig scaled down. Free running or bolt rig style there are many variations and everyone has there own preferences but so long as its safe for fishing it should be ok. Type barbel rigs into Google and select images there are a few there and its not to hard to figure out what you might use. I have hook lengths from 6" to 5ft so thats how varied it can be I also sometimes use bolt rigs but mainly free running.

Sean, Honestly there are no rigs specific to Barbel fishing, hook length is a matter of preference, and can vary on how you percieve the situation you're fishing, i.e in weed, close to weed, in silt, cute fish plucking your bait, but not taking, all these things can have a bearing, and usually experience will decide for an individual the length he might choose, and you'll find opinions on that will vary, some will go longer some will go shorter.
I would say as a rule of thumb start off with 12" and go from there.

In my opinion you should always be free running, as i think anything thats not is potentially a death rig. Some though like to use a semi fixed set up with the lead on a saftey clip, really though ( please don't think i'm being sarcastic ) if you are asking questions like these i wouldn't go that route until you have more experience.
Keep your set up as simple as possible, most do anyway i think, you'll gain nothing by using complicated setups, Thread a swivel to your mailine, then a rubber bead to buffer the lead or feeder, then attach a quick link clip to that swivel, then attach a hooklength by swivel to your main line, with a hook of your choice dependant on the size of bait you are using, and depending on whether you are mounting the bait on the hook, or hair rigging.
Job done, thats the method i use and i guess the vast majority of us with minor differences, and i promise you it's good enough to fool any Barbel out there.

Ian.
