hi all im thinking of going for a long weekend fishing on either the severn or the wye and am seeking advice from those in the know as im from the south and new to barbel fishing, where would be the best place/s to go on a day ticket, as i said im new to it so am not after big fish just a good weekend with a good chance of a few fish? any info much appreciated and good luck to all for the start!

Hi Matt,

Check out the Barbel Directory on the BFW homepage, there are a couple of Wye venues on there that may well interest you. I've heard very good things about them both.

Unfortunately the Severn section is currently empty. If anyone can suggest accommodation I should contact to see if they're interested, please let me know.

Thanks,

Andy

This time of year, get camping.

Find a decent campsite near Ross on Wye or Hereford, get there, pitch your tent, go to Woody's angling in Hereford and ask him to put you on some fish, and he will, cracking fella he is.

This place is bang on, facilities excellent.

If your new to fishing the Wye, that's the best advice you'll get for a successful trip.

Ps. I forgot to say, there's a good stretch right on the campsite, tickets from the camp office, perfect for getting down there, setting up camp and having a fish straight away that afternoon/evening.

Try this place Andy, http://www.coalbrookdaleinn.co.uk/

It has great beer and food and is owned by an angler who will put you on a few good swims and is used to anglers hours.

The river with safe parking is a 2 minute drive away.

If you want paradise on earth why dont you fish the Biblins stretch on the wye ? the owner of the biblins is now doing b&b and its also a superb location , if you need any more info just shout , all the best Graham.

Ah, the Coalbrookdale Inn :). I used to pop in for a sandwich 7 or 8 years ago. Not been there for a year or two, but it was a wonderful pub in a gorgeous location. I could think of worse places to spend a weekend.

Hi Graham.

Who is the owner of the Biblins? Pm if you want.

Love to find out about the BB as well. I thought it was a Club stretch (apart from one chap who thought he owned the whole of the Wye)

I would be interested in having a chat or two

Cheers

Graham

It's changed hands since then Andy. The present owner is a brummie barbel angler who knows how to keep a decent pint and is married to a cook/chef.
My Wife and I called there for lunch on Monday, I had a couple of pints of Butty Bach, (one of four real ales on tap), and my wife and I shared a couple of sandwiches, the roast beef and horseradish was magnificent, beautifully pink tender beef and fresh horseradish; the Cajun chicken, served on the same bread, was fresh cooked and moist with perfect spicing and finished with a generous dollop of mayo. I could easily have sat there all afternoon.

You should write the menu Adrian, it sounds nice to eat just by reading those words. In fact, that's made me quite peckish.

You could try Martin Cullens caravan (and his cooked breakfasts, which take some beating) at temeside cottage, in worcester. You'd then have the lower teme in the garden and the lower severn/diglis 5 minutes away. Martin knows both the teme and severn very well and can offer advice etc.
