Barbel fishing around Aldwark

Staying in Aldwark for 2 days and would like to try for barbel, on the Swale on a day ticket the Ure is outside where we are staying but reading reports i think my best chance would be on the Swale, any information would be appreciated

Hi David, there’s a lot of club water on the Swale that doesn’t have day ticket access. I’d recommend a look at Cundall Lodge Farm or Helperby, as they both have day ticket stretches (give them a google).

Good luck 👍🏻

Aldwark is one of my favourite October venues, not as prolific as other parts of the Ouse system but the barbel tend to be bigger. Leeds DASA control the angling on the Aldwark side, no day tickets and the club book expires 31/12. On the plus side you can fish until 2300hrs that side. Opposite right bank is also Leeds DASA but it's off at dusk there.

As Alan said if you're looking for a day ticket stretch then Cundall probably your best bet.

10 mins drive from Aldwark there is day ticket available on the Ouse at Newton on Ouse [ Newton AC water Cherryfields stretch ] . Go in to village up the main street[ Cherry tree lane ] towards the north entrance of Beningbrough Hall and as you reach the hall gatehouse there is a track to right walk 25yards down there and there is an honesty box on the gate £5 per day no night fishing , plenty of Barbel on that stretch . You should park on the grass verge in the back lane behind the Blacksmiths arms [ signed parking area] and walk to the entrance where the ticket box is ,[ walk south up back lane , right down sills lane and then left up cherry tree avenue to hall entrance ].Its approx 5 mins walk from car park to fishery entrance gate where you get your ticket and enter the fishery. Immediately downstream from this stretch is a long stretch of the Ouse run by York and district amalgamation of anglers , available on day ticket , go on YDAA website for details , you can buy a day ticket online, again good Barbel fishing there but on YDAA stretch it is a good 10 mins walk from parking areas , best to park on the concrete parking area to left of south entrance of Beningbrough Hall and walk down to river through path in the wood , approx 10 mins walk and brings you to mid area of YDAA stretches fishing both up and downstream from this access point , no night fishing on day ticket
