Bait screws or hair j

Depends on what your doing. They’ll both have a similar effect.
you’ll still need to pilot drill a hard pellet with either method.

hairs all the time for me with boilies/pellets

i have easily drilled pellets as small as 6mm up to 25mm plus

just buy a set of micro drill bits off eBay and then use a Dremel tool

job sorted in a few minutes

for meat - a hair loop and a piece of dry spaghetti as the hair stop
I have some screws for meat, they work very well.

All very well Nick, but what spaghetti?

I think spaghetti works fine for hair rig meat, and hair rigs for pellets, using the Fox v stops. Or use a shuttered bait needle to push through meat via bend on hook. To secure large meats in flood I thread the hook length through the meat, securing spaghetti on bend of hook.
This lecture was not meant for you Nick, sure you know anyway.

i remember some years ago seeing a You Tube video by a well known barbel angler using a bent paperclip as a stop?

I have been using the spring out of cheap retractable biros, cut spring in half then bend circular end up 90 degrees, which you tie to your hair, two out of one spring and once screwed into the meat it is really solid 👍

thanks Mark - great idea

like an oversized bait screw

Don't trust bait screws . . .for river fishing hair rigs all day long. For meat I use a custom punch and then wrap the meat in fox arma mesh . . .nuisance fish resistant, NEVER comes off and you can re-use hookbaits if you glug them . . .
