Bait Additives

Just wandering what people's views are of adding additives to hook bait feed pellets and the like , personally I add a touch of garlic oil to my hook bait and feed pellets but am I really improving the attraction by masking the already flavoured pellets with another flavour, ,been watching a few videos of anglers adding this that and the other to catch fish but is it a catch the angler situation marketing ploy.

I use a huge variety of additives and have done for decades.

I doubt I have used an un-flavoured maggot (for example) since about 1985. Flavours there can make a massive difference.

These days I use mostly boilies and paste for my barbel/chub fishing; a function of not just the fact that they can be great baits (they suit some waters better than other baits).

In certain situations eg using nutritional baits in small quantities; adding a surface ‘flavour’ could well be counterproductive. Conversely I added a light surface glug to my regular fishy’ boilie and it helped make it instant without seemingly reducing its long term effectiveness.

When it comes to maggots I only dose the hook bait, one of those sprays that carp anglers use . I have never seen the point in not making the important bit stand out from the thousands of loose fed grubs. These sprays are effectively water , sugar and small amounts of other liquids. They don't do any harm and maybe make a difference sometimes, but it's a confidence thing. I have done it for so long it's more habit these days.
