Avon scales

Simple question: why all the fuss about second-hand Avon Scales? I notice Clive often sells them on the classifieds and was wondering what the fascination is all about?

I have an 8lb pair which weigh in fractions of an ounce.I do not believe you can get better to weigh smaller species. They always weigh 1/4 oz light when i test them, when zeroing i just turn the dial to 1/4 oz to get exact weight. They are also easy to get fixed if needed,do not need batteries and just seem to go on forever.I do have a quality digital pair, graham & white weighmate for bigger species.

Mark, where's the best place to get them fixed as I actually have a couple sitting in the garage gathering dust (32lb and 40lb)?

Sorry Anthony,i do not know where but there are a number of fixers, i seem to remember a thread mentioning names a few years ago.Others will probably post after you asked,or you could always sell them to Clive.Searched and found thread from 2009, Avon, 1 claremont st edmonton n18 2rp 0208 8072254

Cheers for that Clive, but from what I've read the replacement perspex parts are no longer available. £30 for a service? Probably worth it if I was going to use them regularly.
