Hi guys, just joined, been an angler since I was a teenager, on and off, matches when I was younger, then for pleasure when I gave that up. Just returned to fishing again, last season I fished was way back in 2007/8.
I fancied a crack at Barbel having never had on before, so went on the Nidd a few times until I got one, amazing experience catching my first and still my pb at 9lb 4oz, I was trembling after that tussle :D, that was back in 07.
I tried without luck to find them on my local River Calder, near Dewsbury, no luck, and tried for the first time in years yesterday nr Ossett, blanked.
So I'll keep trying until I do find them somewhere in the area, I know they are there, its just finding them. Halibut pellets are what I use, different sized, sometimes use pva bagged, not tried a blockend feeder stuffed with them yet to provide sent trail, thats something I could try, If it works?
At 60 I have to be careful with steep banks, can't handle them like I used to :(

Wish you all good luck for this new season.
Rob

Welcome Rob.

Welcome to the madhouse Robert:( only kidding:)

Hi Rob,
Welcome to the forum
I only joined the site last year, but its really useful. Great advice from everyone, news about your local rivers and something to buy you didn't know you needed in the classified section.
Try garlic spam, or normal luncheon meat sprinkled with garlic powder and left in the fridge for a couple of days to absorb the flavour.
Yes the banks do get steeper as you get older. I'm a few years ahead of you and I take a dog spike and a rope to aid my assent from steep swims.
Have a good season.
Mike

Hello and welcome Robert, the very best of luck with your fishing and I know what you mean when you mention catching your first Barbel. Being from North of the Border i never even knew what a Barbel was until (with the help of a couple of mates from work) i caught my first one from the River Wharfe. Now i'm well and truly hooked.

Thank you for the welcome guys. I went down to the Calder today to check out a big match down Mirfield & Dewsbury stretches, plenty of decent chub, grayling, dace & trout. No barbel caught, which seemed strange, something must have put them off feeding. Got a few pointers from the match guys as to where to look & try. :) near Dewsbury.

Welcome to the forum, Robert, and the very best of luck on your quest. It'll be even more satisfying if you catch after a few blanks. That's what I find, at least. :)

Another young member ;), welcome Rob
