Alligator snapping turtle

One of the lads on another site caught one of these in a Bradford pond weighing 21lb! He reckons there are about fifteen of them swimming around and it's the first time anyone's caught it! His account was funny to read but you can tell it was a scary moment and he was just lucky not to lose his fingers! As he states, the worst thing is that it is his current PB for a UK catch.:)

The links below show a much bigger one caught in Birmingham last month ago and a youtube clip of how snappy their jaws are!

Hooked a whopper a few years ago, hooked in the flipper with an 8/0 owner ssw and 40lb line. The guide seemed to think he could unhook it by trying to poke the hook out with a stick, silly lad. This upset the beast, it got hold of the hook in its beak, pulled its head back into the shell and out popped a straightened hook,(a nice easy catch and release). They fight very slowly and blow streams of bubbles as they come in.

Alligator snapping turtle  Anything that can snap alligators is not on my list of 'A hundred things to catch before you die' :D:D

Cheers, Dave.
