Advice please

Mike Thompson

I have been course and carp fishing for many years, but got the barbel bug last summer on holiday on the Wye.
I live near York and will fish mainly on the Yorkshire Derwent with holiday fishing on the Wye or Severn. So am not planning casting long distances or weights much above 3 or 4 ounces.
My shimano xtea 8000's are too big for my 11ft Avon rod, so what reels would you recommend. I like my rear drag shimano's so am considering purchasing a good second-hand smaller version, but the numbers are a bit confusing, and looking to spend £50-60.
Any advice would be most welcome.
Many thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Another Derwent regular here, Shimano 5000 GTE-C are on my carbon barbel rods. Had a few hundred barbel on them, never been serviced but still a smooth clutch. Something a bit more suitable on the cane!

Don't think I've ever had to use more than 2oz leads on the Derwent.

I use Okuma pins on the float rods.

I have a pair of 2500 Shimano GTM RC's super's, smaller version of the Stradic, c/w fighting drags, the are an ideal fit for Avon's, very light and not under gunned.

I use Shimano XTEA 5000's, also have some older 5000 GTE's for standard Barbel fishing,
For fishing on the Tidal Trent or Flood conditions I use XTEA 6000's
For lighter non-Baitrunner fishing I use Shimano 4000 XT-RB's (Rear Drag) brilliant reels....
